On a slightly hilly stage meant for a breakaway to get away, Alberto Contador decided that the short, but steep, hilltop finish was tough enough to whittle down the general classification field. He was right. His typical standing attack drew out Fabio Aru and Richie Porte, with Aru ending 3rd on the stage to snag a 4 second bonus ahead of Contador. El Pistolero sits atop the standings at the end of Stage 5, but only 2 seconds ahead of Aru. The rest of the GC favorites lost time to these three and it is now a very small field of expected winners.
