Ai, Suna's older sister, comes to visit and reveals something major when she discovers Takeo is in a relationship. She decides to help Takeo understand Rinko better.
Eh?!
Suna's older sister Ai is in love with Takeo!?? I just needed to get that out of the way. We were barely introduced to her in a flashback sharing a funny moment about Takeo with her brother. As expected, she's absolutely stunning and turns heads as she walks down the street, just like her little brother does.
After I thought about it, it wasn't that surprising that she developed feelings for Takeo like Rinko did. Knowing him as a normal kid who's just bigger, it makes sense that she would accept him as part of her life like her brother did. She was already inside the gruff exterior of the big kid and appreciated his big heart and helpful nature. A little scene where seeing some lilies at a flower shop brought a smile to her face made it apparent that she has a Takeo story that sparked her attraction.
This revelation of her big sister love turning to something more made me laugh out loud because it used her total shock and devastation at the news of Takeo's relationship. That was good stuff.
Heh.
Uh oh. Rinko has a secret. I'm pretty sure it's going to be a big misunderstanding about Takeo not touching her until she's old enough and how she's a bad girl because she wants to be held. Takeo's pronouncement that "she has a pure heart," must feel like a dagger to a girl with, well, a pure heart.
The whole thing started with Rinko bumping into Takeo on the train. This lead to the usual Takeo saving the day with his strength, followed by a classmate recording the whole thing to show how cool he was to his other friends. The girls in the class also saw the video, which lead them to make mean remarks about Takeo. Obviously, Suna is not going to be dating any one of these girls, and it was another opportunity to show that those who aren't intimidated by Takeo's appearance appreciate how great a guy he is.
Kyaa! Don't look! Rinko may have fell in love with Takeo because he rescued her and likes her cooking, but it looks like she's starting to get physically attracted to him.
Oh, Rinko wanted more to happen right here! Kyaa~! With Takeo's habit of putting his face too close and then his big hand caressing her cheek at the same time as grabbing the ladybug, how could she not expect something more to happen? To top it off, it was an innocent gesture and he showed compassion to a cute insect. Rinko turned into a puddle of emotions after that, I'm sure.
No episode would be complete without showing how ridiculous the shoujo conventions for facial expressions look on Takeo. Personally, I think he pulled it off...
Takeo's mom was an amateur wrestler. That explains a great many things.
Suna's sister Ai stole the show. Going from cool beauty, to affectionate sister, to a crying mess on the floor in about 5 seconds was a sight to behold. Before we could even process that she was as excited to see Takeo as her own little brother, she turned into a jealous emotional knot. Ah, that was so good to watch.
My unrequited love's girlfriend can't be this cute! That's going to be a light novel series title in the next 6 months, I'm sure of it.
Notice that both Ai and Rinko are blushing furiously at Takeo's offer to eat the bad cookies. That's perfect boyfriend stuff right there.
After all these years, Takeo still impresses Ai with his self-awareness. Gotta love that guy.
Hmm.
We're not given much in the way of previews for this show, so I have no idea what's to come from Ai helping Takeo find out what Rinko is reluctant to talk about. Ai definitely knows Takeo wasn't going to understand the teenage girl mind from reading teeny bopper magazines. He shot Ai right through the heart with his straightforward admission that he's dense. It reminded me greatly of the scene in Forrest Gump where Forrest tells Jenny that he is not a smart man, but he knows what love is. Takeo knows his limitations and he's aware of how others perceive him.
Much like last episode where he wasn't hurt by the putdowns from Rinko's friends but was more concerned that Rinko hurt for him, his concern for Rinko is about her pain in not telling him something, even if it's something that would break them up. Straight shot through Ai's heart again!
Well, what is this terrible something that Rinko is reluctant to talk about? Is it as small as her wishing that Takeo kissed her when they were alone in the park looking at the stars, but now can't ask for it because Takeo tried to reassure her that he wouldn't take advantage of her until she was all grown up? A pure girl can't ask for a naughty thing like a kiss after all that, right? I expect they'll start with something small like holding hands, although you never know. This show has surprised me with lots of warmth and humor in only 5 episodes so far.
