Takeo is the quintessential gentle giant, but all the girls he's ever liked have had feelings for his best friend, the good looking Sunakawa. Will meeting new high school girl Rinko on a crowded train change their dynamic? A love comedy starring a rough manly man turns genre conventions on its head in My Love Story!!.
Heh.
This show is precious! The two friends who are total opposites yet get along so well make a great duo, but watching them tackle the world together was a joy to watch.
Takeo claims he and Suna, his nickname for Makoto Sunakawa, are just friends because their moms are friendly neighbors, but it appears to me that a real deep friendship has grown between these two boys.
I can't believe Takeo's voice actor is the same guy playing Hachiman in Yahari. That's range.

Even without the fairy tale introduction of the two ogres, one who liked people but was sad they were afraid of him and the other who volunteered to harass a village so that other ogre could play hero, it was obvious from the graduation ceremony how admired Takeo was. Just not by the girls, unfortunately.
Boys Takeo's age get how great he is, but adults are another problem because of how large and scary he looks.
For a rambunctious boy growing up, Takeo's gentle nature didn't let him make minor setbacks, like losing video games to Suna, take his frustrations out on others.
But Takeo is not gentle where it matters.
Train gropers who say girls "are asking for it" because of their short skirts don't get to make that kind of statement in Takeo's presence.
Rinko, the appreciative girl Takeo saved, may not have seen this kind of violence before, but it looked like the same old same old to Suna. Mr. Pervert kept his opinions to himself.
This situation turned into the pure meet-cute. Rinko came by to offer home baked cheesecake in gratitude. Then she "accidentally" left her cellphone in his room so he would have to return it to her.
Rinko's hobby is baking sweets and Takeo's hobby is making appreciative noises and expressions over great tasting stuff he's never tasted before. They would make a great pair and I think Suna picked up on that too.
Unfortunately for Takeo, he's never seen what a girl acts like if she likes him. He's so used to girls liking his friend Suna instantly, that he interprets Rinko's actions as trying to get close to him to get close to Suna. The eternal wingman needs to take his own shot.
Hmm.
It's been a long time since a shoujo romance anime has impressed me. Even though the focus is on Takeo, make no mistake, this is a story that is aimed at teenage girls. The character designs, the good looking guy shooting down all the other girls, even the dramatic situation where they meet are all standard elements in a love comedy. The difference here is the scary looking dude is the love interest, the main character and is forcing a love triangle on the others who don't want it. That's a new take and that's good comedy.
If Takeo weren't such a good guy and a normal boy despite his size, this story wouldn't work. But it's clear from the graduation ceremony at his junior high how much his classmates and fellow club members liked and respected him. His concern for little children, new mothers with babies and old people also demonstrate his heart. His normalness as a teenage boy comes through in having to gather up all his manga magazines before a girl enters his room. He's just a big kid with a big heart.
Suna is an interesting guy too. His cool exterior belies his own regard for Takeo and for others around him. He's the one who gave up his seat for the young mother and he noticed the groper first. He also tried to get out of Takeo's room to give him some alone time with Rinko, but that was just too soon for Rinko, it looked like to me. That little scene was the spark for the overall source of comedy, the misunderstanding by Takeo that Rinko began to like Suna. The other spark was how Suna pronounced Rinko a nice girl, which is something Takeo has never seen him do before. The way I see it, Suna had been protecting Takeo from bad matches throughout their friendship and is now trying to help him get together with the first girl worthy of his friend and the first girl who was so obviously into Takeo. Gah! I love this stuff!
