Junketsu no Maria - Episode 8
The different factions deal with the aftermath of Maria's actions in the last battle. Some grow closer to Maria as others turn away.
Heh.
There are other beings in this world being forgotten, which makes them weaker, much like Cernunnos, as we saw with the visit of this Clan of the North. Perhaps these forgotten beings are the sources of the witches' summons.
Bernard isn't acting very holy, asking a mercenary to rape a virgin, even if it is a military act, in a sense, by neutralizing an interfering third party during the Hundred Years War.
The inscription on Galfa's box for his weaponized prosthetic, DULCE BELLUM INEXPERTIS, means "War is sweet to those haven't experienced it." Ironic, sardonic and a warning all at the same time for Galfa.
Maria and Joseph are turning into a real couple.
Maria's embarrassed denials fit her personality perfectly, but it's a bit of a cliché for a forceful character to be a tsundere when confronted with needing intimacy.
Hmm.
Ezekiel's feelings for Maria continued to be concerned and caring for her wellbeing. She wants Maria to stop being so willful and stubborn so the villagers wouldn't be forced to renounce her, and so that she herself wouldn't have to strike her down. It may already be too late, with the monks setting up shop there because Michael appeared there and they're spreading lies about her medicine being poison. That's some pretty terrible poison if it hadn't killed Martha already after taking it for years and years. The act of sowing doubt doesn't have to be logical or consistent, what's important is that some of those seeds grow shoots.
Bernard isn't taking chances either, first by installing Gilbert as an Inquisitor at the location of Michael's appearance, and then by making sure her physical power gets taken away with her virginity. Shrewd and ruthless.
Cernunnos made a timely appearance because he's seen powerful entities lose their powers, including himself, because humans forgot about them. This is a common conceit in many fantasy stories that faith, belief, or some kind of worship by people is the ultimate source of power by magical beings. In this regard, the Church of the World may just be protecting its turf from Maria, who was already a powerful witch. The intimation by the envious Church was that Maria was powerful because her name was known positively among the populace. Cernunnos makes plain that it's just knowing about magical beings, positive or negative, that makes them powerful. They grow weak, like he and the Northern Clan did, when they are forgotten.
Maria has ostensibly lost an ally in Martha, who is on her deathbed, and perhaps being confined there by the inadequate medicine of Br. Gilbert, but we'll see if that continues or not. Ann won't give up her truth, but this may be a source of tension during the local Inquisition. Lots of moving parts being set up in this story right now, so I'm looking forward to how they fit together and where they'll be going in the final third of the season.
