Maria struggles with balancing the contradictory wishes of Joseph and Anne. Michael reminds Ezekiel of her duty.

Heh.

This episode felt kind of like a mini recap. Maria is still putting on a big show. Ezekiel is still two steps behind in seeing her use flashy magic. The villagers still make requests. Michael is still watching over things. So is Cernunnos. And the English and French are still fighting and upset with Maria over not winning any spoils during their skirmishes.

Maria and Joseph went on their first "date." I'd freak out too riding on a flying pitchfork the first time.

Maria doesn't have much experience talking to confident men like Galfa. She is a virgin after all.

Bernard goes a little nuts at learning all the coincidences about Maria being a virgin and having a man named Joseph in her life.

Interesting that Cernunnos' shadow formed a snake right before Michael came down.

Hmm.

Michael had to have a little talk with Ezekiel about being his spear. The little scene with Anne showed how living in the messy material world makes absolute laws look not so absolute. Michael made the same points about Natural Law that he made to Maria, but I still don't understand the difference between people building castles and witches using their powers. Perhaps it comes to a question of judgment. Just as the animals don't pay any attention to the artificial boundaries drawn by people over their territories, so too do people not pay any attention to the Higher Rules drawn by God. Maria's problem may be that she has the same small perspective as People, but the powers of a Higher Being.

The balance in power and perspective isn't there. We see MIchael interfering with a witch, but not regular people. Maybe if Maria concentrated her powers on the other witches, the Heavens wouldn't care.

The other wrinkle I see is that the Church of the World is concerned with Maria gaining prestige among the people. One can look at this from a purely political standpoint, but it's more interesting to add in genuine Faith to the matrix of motivations. Both the Church of the World and the Church of the Heavens may be concerned that Maria is becoming a local deity.

Certainly, all the flashy stuff she summons are older "gods" who were worshipped, even if they were just powerful creatures. Powerful creatures like Maria. Powerful creatures that can also fade from memory like Cernunnos. That might explain the hint of madness behind Bernard's laughter at the similarities between the early circumstances of Mary the Mother of God and this virgin witch who just emerged from the forest one day.
