Hakone attacks Sohoku to open a gap before the final mountain, burning up Izumida. Sohoku begins their counterattack.

Heh.

Aargh! Another death montage? This time for Izumida? Hakogaku is turning Yowapeda into Akame ga Kill!

Well, now we know what Fukutomi's plan is for Hakone to win. He started using up and discarding his riders on the right day, unlike Midousuji.

Onoda had a little crisis there when he realized that the flats right before the final climb would be the last time all 6 of his teammates would be riding together. He collected himself without any help, though. He's getting mentally tougher.

The flashback for Izumida showed why he was so impatient to get results within his first year - he wanted to ride the most important race with his mentor Shinkai. Gar! Calm down fujoshi.

Izumida's volume goes to eleven.

Now, how serious is he for pulling at top speed? We know that when he wants to go really fast for the line, he zips up his jersey, but he didn't do that here. Perhaps he wasn't looking for top speed, which a sprinter only unleashes for a handful of seconds, but for that sustained ramp up before he uncorks the kick? If so, he put a hurt, and a big gap, on Sohoku.

Nice reprise on Izumida's spear.

I don't remember a naked muscleman being part of this graphic. Calm down fujoshi.

Hmm.

Fukutomi has laid down his cards. Make a gap, using his leadout men and sprinters before the big final climb, make a bigger gap on the climb with his climbers, and survive the descent to the finish line. Straightforward, earnest, and only a strong team with right kinds of riders can make that happen.

Kinjou is beginning to lay out his cards. He wants to keep his team together all the way to the start of the climb. And he wants to use his senior guys, including himself, to keep the gap between Hakone and themselves small. Burning up Tadokoro is a given, but what about Makishima? And shouldn't Kinjou be saving himself as much as possible to follow the climbers' wheels on the slopes? Kinjou has always been, not sneaky, but clever in how he calls audibles on the road. Maybe his knee was worse off than we thought, and he's setting up the juniors to take it to the line? No matter how it shakes out, I see a showdown shaping up between Manami and Onoda for the finale. The fun stuff is going to be how we get there.

Cycling Porn.

We got a good shot of the entire Sohoku team following big boy Tadokoro. Tadokoro is so big Imaizumi and Naruko think they have to go two abreast to block the wind for him. The three juniors show how you do Indian pacelining, by rotating from the back and only pulling for 20 seconds or so. And we get that stupid sparking from a Campy shifter. Sigh.

I used to joke with my riding buddies that I only rode at the front of our group to set the pace, because they weren't going to get any wind protection from me. I'm small like Onoda, so I sit low on the bike and have hardly any shoulder width either. Still, there is some wind blocking from a small person in front of a tall person, because of how the wind stream rises up from an obstacle. A short person blocking a crosswind is about as effective as a tall person, but you have to find that optimum distance to get into the wind hole. With a tall guy, there's no real guesswork and you can ride as close as you want to him. With a short guy, you might find yourself almost out of the lateral wind screen if you ride too far away from him.
