A couple of weeks after the last battle with Ragyou, her assistant Hououmaru comes back for revenge. Senketsu's spirit is still with Ryuuko, and the students have one last victory.

Heh.

What a nice epilogue. It reminded me very much of when the Hobbits returned to the Shire after the events of the Lord of the Rings, and had one last skirmish with a weakened Saruman to show how much their adventure had strengthened and matured them. Same thing here, with Satsuki giving up the sword for real, because she only picked it up to defeat her mother, and Hououmaru's return wasn't going to snatch victory from the jaws of utter defeat, plus her Council Members all became better versions than their black copies, naked or not.

We had our nostalgia with Senketsu, because even if a sailor uniform is something to be outgrown, it is also something to be remembered fondly and to be carried within a woman's heart.

Even Mako's first Moment reminded us of that. Senketsu is still alive within Ryuuko. She'll wear her Sunday Best on the inside!

It wasn't a galaxy-sized pair of scissors, but a whole school-sized one is just as good for this story.

It wouldn't be Kill la Kill if the villain didn't tie Satsuki up, and also hang Mako upside down. It's to be expected!

Hououmaru made a big mistake trying to power the Honnouji Academy Robot with Mako. Because a big Boss requires a big Mako Moment. Huge!

Mako's Message: you're better than you were before! Even though the black copies of the Council Members and Satsuki were based on the memories of the other students, that's old data. They've been through much more since the raiding of the other schools.

A big Mako Moment like that can only mean the final sequence is going to be just as big. With the spirit of Senketsu calling down the scissors still in space, and becoming huge scissors that can cut through even Nudist Beach's old aircraft carrier, we got the big ending we expect from the Trigger animation crew.

Hmm.

I liked that this story was also released several months after the season finale. It gave us a chance to get that nostalgic feeling for the characters and the little animation hooks the show gave us during its run. As an epilogue, it was a real ending too.

The senior students are graduating and the younger ones have to transfer since the whole island was destroyed. We get a sense of continuity as well with Mako and Ryuuko attending the same new school.

However, we also get the very Japanese sense of a new beginning. Satsuki cuts her hair short (to match the scenes we saw in the end sequence of the finale), and lets the wind take the strands, looking very much like life fibers as the setting sun strikes them. She is a new Satsuki, facing forward, but paying tribute to her past.

I missed this show, and I squee'd like a little girl at the first Mako Moment. Just a great long goodbye episode.
