Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei - Episode 5

The Course-2 club members become student activists. The terrorist connections with the kendo club president run deep. Losing a war of words means time to use guns and grenades.

Heh.

A debate using logic against the emotionality of "equality?" As if winning that kind of debate would ever work in real life... Oh no, it didn't. Losers got to shoot up the place and try to take hostages. How quaint. Ideological terrorist tactics, as opposed to Islamic style suicide bombs.

I love how President Mayumi took all the emotional power away from the student activists by insisting on changing the charter so that Course-2 irregular magic users can also run for student council president. That's a way bigger symbolic gesture than increasing some club's budget.

Mad Miyuki is mad. And just what are you doing with Mibu's phone number, Tatsuya, huh?

Our BAMF didn't have much to do this week either, except for sneaky style negotiation tactics, and making another girl go all googly-eyed because of his "modesty."

Tatsuya really is no good at magic. Mizuki thought he was just being modest, but no: true suckage. And he doesn't want to use what little magic he can use for combat, rather to engineer a new power source. He wants to save the world? *swoon* Mizuki came to this school just to learn how to use her magic sensitive eyes, but now she's inspired by our BAMF to find an impressive goal for herself.

It must really help to have a shinobi as your martial arts instructor. He knows all kinds of stuff about all kinds of people. How conveeeenient. It's always nice to have a ninja on your side. At the same time, he says that the Shiba siblings information manipulation seem to be complete, which of course he doesn't buy for a second.

Hmm.

How rare to see idealistic and emotional student activists portrayed as losers, but not that rare in anime, since Japan is a much more socially conservative (not politically) society. Activists are usually played for laughs in much of pop culture over there, and not taken that seriously. That's why it's not surprising to see Mayumi's approach to achieving "equality" as the preferred style, as opposed to being rude, and staging a sit-in in the broadcast room.

With actual Blanche using tear gas, guns, and rocket launchers against the school auditorium, will next episode turn into Tatsuya facing adversity to go get his magic guns and try to secretly pull some BAMF maneuver, only to have someone find out how even more BAMF he is? Or will something else entirely happen? And where is Azusa? I didn't see her at all this episode. If she's not at the auditorium, then she'll be in the Practical Skills section where Tatsuya and Miyuki are headed. Maybe she'll get another chance to gawk at Tatsuya's guns.
