Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren - Episode 9
The beach episode! The Priestess makes a surprise visit. Rikka achieves a new form. Is Sophia not so eternal after all?
With Kumin's aunt asking for help to run her beach food shack, we have all the pretense we need for beach episode. We have a couple of surprises, though. First, Shichimiya strikes a dynamic entry pose. It turns out Rikka asked her to come help, and to get some advice on her weakening power. We had an inkling something was wrong when Rikka couldn't summon a fantasy world to help Shinka practice her battle against Real Fake Mori Summer. Now we know for sure. Oh, before we get to the second surprise, Kumin introduces her friends to her aunt.
Oh, give it up Shinka. You'll always be Mori Summer to Kumin. The kanji in your name (森夏) even spell it out in a punny engrish kind of way. The other surprise is an appearance from the Priestess, Rikka's older sister Touka. She's at this particular beach by coincidence, taking care of her head chef's little daughter. She seems to have a good handle on Japanese for an Italian... The little girl also gives us some age-appropriate fantasy play to compare with all the other chuunibyou running around. She gives us confirmation through Rikka not being able to catch a bokken (wooden sword), even with the Evil Lord Death Eye uncovered, that Rikka thinks she's losing her power.
Overnight, we have two different conversations about what's going on with Rikka. Yuuta talks with Touka, and Rikka talks with Shichimiya. The other girls are left with their hugging pillows...
Touka wants to make sure Yuuta is treating Rikka properly, and how her fantasy life is still affecting her. Yuuta says he's really in love with her, and that she's taking her time in growing up. This seems to satisfy Touka's concerns, but she still swats him with her spoon. Stay alert, shounen, she's still in charge.
Meanwhile, Rikka is panicking that she's losing her power because she's in love with Yuuta, and wants to know from Shichimiya what she should do. Shichimiya cast aside her love to become the Eternal Magical Devil Girl, but she doesn't think that's the best course for Rikka. The Evil Lord Death Eye has a contract with the Tyrant Lord, the source of her power, but she also has a contract with the Dark Flame Master. There must be some power in that contract too. Shichimiya wants to force Rikka to show her this power.
The next day, in a fantasy battle between the two, Rikka draws out the power of her contract with Yuuta, and it's presented as memories of all the little moments they've shared together, and of Yuuta just being Yuuta. Her new power takes shape, and instead of a magical girl, she's now a mecha girl in a sailor uniform. The Eternal Magical Devil Girl suffers utter defeat.
With Yuuta reclaiming his old fantasy play as something fun to share with Rikka from time to time, we have Rikka integrating her new life events with her old fantasy play. I hope they'll find some happy middle as they mature. Rikka's going at her own pace.
On the trip home, something else has awakened that will become the source of drama for the final few episodes. Shichimiya's old feelings for Yuuta have come roaring back! Rivalry, loss of identity, and lots of crying is coming our way soon.
