The first week of my climbing block is over, and I have one word to describe it: youch. It was a shortened week too, because of the extra day of rest from the cardio 3 week block, but with the cardio base, that means no puking on the extra tough grades where my cadence goes below 60 rpm. This Rose Bowl Ramps course I devised has no corollary to my 2010 records, so I can only compare my results to my memories from last year. I will be going 3 minutes faster when I get to base fitness, which means 30 seconds faster on average on each ramp there. Lots of work to do before I get there. Also, I will also start to increase my weekly mileage as I get stronger and drop the water weight. The sore muscles are already sucking at the fat cells as I've dropped 3 pounds this week. Usually I have trouble dropping that fat during this time of year because it's cold outside. But recovery day with sore muscles should help me there.
Here's some time lapse of my easier version of rolling loop through La Canada Flintridge.
The clockwise run around that loop features a much steeper climb than the steady low gradient of Chevy Chase. I think I'll be doing that next weekend. The CHP was very busy handing out speeding tickets on the 210 around there on a Saturday morning. I passed 4 different cars getting pulled over during my 3 laps around the off-ramps. The CHP station is right near there, so people shouldn't be surprised that they're waiting for them.
