Amagi Brilliant Park - Episode 9
The Elemental Fairies learn teamwork as they work to shut down Maple Castle's lockdown defenses. Their new show becomes a success.
Heh.
Squee! The idol group gets its own episode!Princess Latifa: "Whatever you do, don't press that red button!" The fairies immediately press that red button...
At the start of the episode, it looks like their new show has improved since we last saw it in Episode 6, but the fairies themselves are out of sync.
Latifa definitely knew about the castle's override procedures needing 4 people to complete them. Keikakudori (計画どおり, just as planned).
I was expecting either Salama or Sylphy to mash the button, but we got everyone involved. Good job. I don't think Princess Latifa was expecting the massive armaments to pop out of the walls causing a siege, though.
Moffle got to look cool for a few seconds longer than his elaborate plan during the pirate attack. And the old salarymen uncles could only complain about how tough it was going to get back inside the castle. It would have to be all up to the fairies. Fufufu. Keikakudori (計画どおり).
The trials seemed specifically designed for our particular fairies. The first two challenges, with the karaoke and dance rhythm arcade game could have fit the story of an amusement park theme, but the typing class? Ah, no. The last one with the drill bits was straight out of game theory and was a good thing to cement how the girls felt about each other and the team.
The comedy was top notch, again. If you have cute girls doing cute things in front of cameras, you need a peanut gallery.
Pouty Latifa is the best!
The Elementals themselves each got a chance for full focus animation.
We've seen Muse before because she's the designated leader of the group. Sylphy has just been so expressive in her airheaded way, that we couldn't help but notice her. One thing revealed in this episode was how they're replacements for the previous Elementario attraction, when those group members all quit at the same time 6 months prior. Our current Elementario were just thrown together with no experience, so it's not surprising they have teamwork problems.
As an idol group, they're all supposed to sing and dance, but each of them had gaps. Well, not Muse, but she ended being a liability on the typing challenge. And Sylphy only kept a tune by the force of her personality. The way she sang in the karaoke room was the first time in a long time that a Kyoani show had reminded me of Haruhi Suzumiya.
The revelation of this episode was Koboli.
As the quiet one, she just hadn't had a chance to shine. We still didn't get to see her power at work, but at least she didn't have to resort to holding up a little trowel.
One thing this episode established for our idol group is that they are paired up. Fire with Water and Earth with Air. Muse and Salama have a clash of personalities, but they still seem drawn to each other. Meanwhile, the quiet Koboli finds her opposite in the expressive Sylphy.
Sylphy is a known quantity, but the episode didn't skimp on her dancing ability.
And she may be weird and a little oblivious to other's concerns, but she's not all the way oblivious.
The contrasted pairing of Salama and Muse showed itself even before the lockdown. Muse knows what a cutesy nice girl Salama is on twitter, but she needs to play an aloof disconnected character in person, with a rebellious bad girl flair. We know that type. We also know the eager to please type in Muse who tries to take on too much. To see this fleshed out wasn't too surprising either. What was surprising was that she's not that far behind Sylphy in the, ah, development department.
Hmm.
With a little bit of crisis to spur their team building, since they had to tackle the challenges before the park opened on Saturday, the Elemental Fairies are now clicking and their new show is actually filling up their auditorium. The old guy that used to go in there to nap isn't going to get much rest anymore with all the applause. The teaser for next episode has Latifa asking Isuzu not to tell Sieya something. I have a feeling it's related to Isuzu's sad face from last episode. I also wonder if it has something to do with the fairies noticing how there are more flowers on the tree in the castle garden. Since the title for next episode is "Not Enough Workarounds (or Options)," it may finally be time to explore Seiya's past history with Latifa as the park attendance is still too deep in the hole before the deadline. I think Seiya has all the pieces in place for the last push. He just needs to believe that Magic Hour is coming to do something he can't imagine.
