Finally, Limit Break gave us Onoda singing on the bike. Only in a flashback, though. But it was enough to remind us how THE NATIONAL CHAMPION OF JAPAN runs on friendship power instead of a lust for victory.

The flashbacks fill in the blanks between Makishima and Onoda’s appearances in the movie and how Onoda got his winning groove back. Kinjou gave him the trick of talking to the version of his friend in his memories. But the spark that put Onoda back on track was knowing his connection to Makishima was still evident. Even a scrawled note on the back of a used envelope was enough to recharge Onoda’s batteries. Team Sohoku rides for each other, and THE NATIONAL CHAMPION OF JAPAN carries that spirit the most.
