Episode 6 – “How Are Your Fortunes This Year, Senpai?”

Have you ever wondered how those Seven Mysteries of High School, the urban legends that students scare themselves with, start? One anime, Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, based its entire dark comedy around the premise. Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro shows us how one mystery in their school might start. All the couples trying to find a place to kiss on the last day before winter break will avoid the art club room. Why? Because a pale, naked, bosomy ghost will chase them out! The art club president’s penchant for bare skin, especially her alabaster skin tone, cries out for urban legend status. I’m curious if Nagatoro and Senpai will discover or create the Seven Mysteries of their school.
Speaking of questionable topics, how sexually charged is that school in Miss Nagatoro? Everywhere Nagatoro and Senpai went to find privacy, they found a couple of high school students getting it on! We knew that Nagatoro’s friend, Sakura, was a serial dater of boys, but was it confirmed that she was “easy?” Think of all the doujins she launched when Nagatoro and Senpai found Sakura in the nurse’s office, doing this and that behind a bed curtain. But Nagatoro and Senpai never did find a moment of privacy. They exchanged Christmas gifts on the roof in the presence of many canoodling couples. Why should they care about showing each other affection in public now? Their problem: they can’t openly display themselves in front of people who know them. Worse, their friends will tease them mercilessly about how they can’t admit how much the clumsy pair cares for each other. Show me all the blushing embarrassment!

Hoho. Miss Nagatoro starts with a provocative question: “What makes a good Christmas gift?” Anetoro can read between the lines. She’s good at picking apart Nagatoro’s evasions. If Nagatoro cares about this hypothetical person, she should give him something he’ll use daily. Of course, it’s a he! But for a little sister, what could be better than a life-sized big sister doll? When will those go on sale?
Miss Nagatoro keeps true to the slice-of-life formula by acknowledging the passage of time. It’s Christmas and the end of the year already! Are Nagatoro and Senpai on a Christmas Eve date? Look at all the hand-holding here! Ack! Senpai was only dreaming! But he does have a present for Nagatoro. Will he have the courage to give it to her? Nagatoro is hyperactive about Christmas Eve, and so is her teasing. That’s her fuel for calling Senpai a lonely virgin. Oh, good. Senpai planned to surprise Nagatoro. Dash!
Gah. Foiled by the Nagatoro Friends. And random dudes? Hah! The gals and flashy guys already suspect Senpai and Nagatoro are dating. They’ve held hands and stuff! Gamo, Yosshii, and the other gyaru friend are mad they don’t have boyfriends. Ah. They’re mad the other girls have Christmas Eve dates with their guys. So, uh, what’s the argument here? Two gals will go on dates, and the others will have an endless karaoke party. Why did Gamo pull Nagatoro and Senpai into this? I know! It’s the start of Miss Nagatoro keeping the baka couple from spending time alone to exchange gifts. Senpai figured it out too.
I’m surprised Senpai feels surprised at Nagatoro giving him a gift. She took care of him when he was sick, so come on! Well. The dude still has trust and intimacy issues. Cute! Nagatoro noticed Senpai’s Christmas present. Hoh. The big question. Isn’t Nagatoro’s boyfriend sitting next to her? Deflection! Evasion! Swatting bushy hair! Look. Nagatoro and Senpai can exchange gifts without going on a Christmas date. But Miss Nagatoro needs to make a chaotic production out of this. Haha! Gamo wants Senpai to join them in the lonely-hearts karaoke party! Yes. Senpai concocted a plan! He’ll join them later after checking the art club room. What a coincidence! Nagatoro forgot something there too! Aw. Gamo and Sakura knew the baka couple needed alone time. They’re rooting for Senpai!
These two are just pretending to look for forgotten items in the art club room! Just date already! Deep breath. They’re taking their time and taking baby steps. Hee. It looks like a quick draw contest at high noon. Who will pull out their Christmas present first? Adorable! Listen to the nervous squeal in Nagatoro’s voice. Doki-doki, doki-doki! The ultra-fine detailed hair on Nagatoro paints this moment as a cherished memory for Senpai in Miss Nagatoro. Denied! A nude art club president suddenly appears. Talk? Fight? Run? I don’t know about you, but I got my Christmas present. Celestial beams of censorship strike our screens again. The president’s reason for soaking up the atmosphere of the club room is decidedly plausible.
That’s a ruined plan. Now, where can Nagatoro and Senpai go to exchange gifts in private? And they have a time limit because the school is about to close before the winter break. The nurse’s office! Surely they’ll be alone in there. Har. Wiggly arm teasing from Nagatoro. What naughty things will the pervy, creepy virgin do to Nagatoro after dragging her into the nurse’s office? Oh, how about whatever Sakura and her current boyfriend do behind the bed curtain? Denied again! Miss Nagatoro continues the quest for gift-giving privacy. Remember: the point of staying at school to exchange gifts was so people wouldn’t see them do so in public. How much more open than a rooftop full of cuddling teenagers be?
This is the perfect place! No one will pay attention to Nagatoro and Senpai. It’s also chilly and windy up there, so Senpai can smoothly present a scarf to Nagatoro. Oho. Nagatoro chose a scarf for Senpai too! They’re a perfect match. Did they join the all-night karaoke party? The eye-catchers show two new Seven Mysteries. The Anetoro Doll came to life! And a pale, nude ghost scares naughty teenagers away from school!
Wait a minute! Is that Senpai’s dad sitting next to his mom? The way Senpai and his mother acted when Senpai was sick made it seem they didn’t even think about contacting a father to take care of Senpai. So, not an absent father but a distant father in Senpai’s family life. Hee. Mom knows who’s calling Senpai. Nagatoro looks so happy wearing Senpai’s muffler. Ah. Nagatoro goads Senpai into visiting a specific shrine for New Year’s Day. Miss Nagatoro shows how Senpai’s masochism switch is flipped on. He looks forward to Nagatoro toying with him! Fun. Nagatoro took a part-time job at that specific shrine as a miko (巫儳, shrine maiden). Aha! I see where this is going. This shrine will be famous for its love fortunes, so Nagatoro will be especially curious about what Senpai gets. Senpai made another heartfelt memory since we can see the rays of light playing with Nagatoro’s long black hair. Boo. The girl was fishing for compliments, Senpai!
Now we get to it. What are Senpai’s fortunes for the coming year? Nagatoro’s fortunes were the best! Expectedly, Senpai will have a rough year. But his relationship prediction gave him advice, “Nothing will happen unless you take action.” Just do it! Act now, Senpai! Okay. He can’t jump into Alpha Chad territory all at once, but he can take small steps. It’s a good thing Nagatoro understands him so well. Miss Nagatoro gives Senpai several memorable scenes at the shrine. Oh. Now Senpai realized that couples come to this shrine praying for love. Nagatoro is a sneaky flirt! And she’s a thirsty flirt. Wow. Senpai said something impressive. He won’t pray to the gods to ask Nagatoro out. He’ll make it happen himself! Before that, though, he’ll need to endure Nagatoro’s teasing. When will Miss Nagatoro become Mrs. Senpai?
