Proof 5 – “Science-types Fell in Love, So They Tried Analyzing Their Proof of Love.”
Hmm.
Science Fell in Love ❤️ gave us so many levels of self-referential frames this week. We need to go back to the first season to understand how deep this crazy maze goes. In the eighth episode, we met Yamamoto-sensei, the manga artist who wants to draw a story about Ayame, Shinya, and scientific love. It’s funnier when you know the original creator of Science Fell in Love is Alfred Yamamoto. Shinya hates Arika Yamamoto because she manufactured drama between Ayame and him on Okinawa. Well, she’s back with her readers’ notes about love.
Here we see a manga adaptation of the anime’s character designs. These character designs were anime adaptations of the manga’s character designs! Like the movie Inception, which entered dreams of people dreaming as they dreamed of dreaming dreamers, we’re three levels deep into “Rikei-ception!”
The manga panels covered the first scene of the series when Ayame nonchalantly confessed her feelings for Shinya. Again, a manga adaptation of the anime adaptation of the manga! The episode makes it even more outrageous when the cliffhanger ends with Ayame doing the scene again! Rikei-ception!
Finally, there was one more self-reference plot point in the Science Fell in Love ❤️, but it was a generic narrative device. Kotonoha talks about herself as a “friend” with the same love problems and circumstances. Shinya’s emotional radar barely functions, so he doesn’t note Kotonoha’s concealment. That allows Shinya to compliment Kotonoha to her face, which lets the younger student have funny reactions. Kotonoha’s friend-ception!

Manga panels of Science Fell in Love ❤️! It’s the first scene from last season! But not the same way... Manga-version Ayame “wuvs” Shinya! Ah. This is the product of Yamamoto-sensei’s new manga starring Shinya and Ayame. Yamamoto aims for an anime adaptation of her manga adaptation of the anime adaptation of the manga adaptation of Science Fell in Love... It’s Rikei-ception! Oh, right. Ayame and Shinya agreed to let Yamamoto depict their love story to get reader responses. Why is the manga artist in the Ikeda Lab reading BL doujins? She’s hiding from her editor! Unsuccessfully! Terminator Editor Ogu likes cracking mangaka skulls and walnuts, and he just ran out of walnuts. He used to play rugby, so that’s why he’s a massive specimen. Please show some sympathy for manga author Alfred Yamamoto.
Oh, good. Let’s deal with Kotonoha’s romantic cliffhanger from last week’s Science Fell in Love ❤️. That college boy Naoya deserves an answer. Kotonoha’s grandpa wants his granddaughter to take over the dojo! Uh oh. Dad asks about Kotonoha’s love life. Mom hasn’t smelled a man’s scent on her yet! What a nose! Kotonoha’s heart isn’t ready. Rikekuma is Kotonoha’s teddy bear. You don’t need to love someone to start dating him. Aw. Poor girl is still gun-shy after her crush on her high school teacher.
Good man, Shinya. He trusts Ayame’s sense that Kotonoha has worries. Oho. Kotonoha’s “friend” has the same problems she does. Her “friend” needs help deciding whether to go out with a boy. Kotonoha’s “friend” wants the same kind of relationship another lovey-dovey couple has. Science Fell in Love ❤️ shows Kotonoha and her “friend” have lots in common! Shinya doesn’t understand this word problem, so he’ll make an equation. He inadvertently calls Ayame and himself a “Baka-Couple.” He is correct, as usual. If there’s no rational way to solve Kotonoha’s irrational problem, solve it irrationally! Using math makes it appear logical, but the input numbers are emotional judgments. It’s a convoluted way of flipping a coin. Kotonoha’s heart took a step forward. It fits that Kotonoha took her turn in the eye-catch.
Oh, finally. Yamamoto published her manga, and the readers returned their personal notes defining love. Shinya and Ayame want to find similar experiences to match their Proof of Love equation. Uh oh. Science Fell in Love ❤️ balances the positive with the negative. Kosuke belatedly realized his awkwardness around Ena might also correlate to love data. He doesn’t want to be in love with Ena. As if he has a choice. These descriptions of love worry Kosuke and give Ayame hope. Eek. Ayame is a ravenous love monster who wants to bite Shinya’s neck. She wants her physical relationship to go beyond kissing to “necking!” Whoa. One of these notes took a dark turn toward attending a funeral. Love can also be a heavy burden. But love can be a sparkly spectacle at the same time.
It’s a familiar scene in Science Fell in Love ❤️, Ayame and Shinya working back-to-back. Shinya eats a nutrition block. Ayame casually tells him she’s in love with him. Shinya drops his power bar. Yes, a familiar scene. Eeehh!!! We’ve come full circle!
