Episode 6 – “Rebellion’s Cry”
Hmm.
This week, BIRDIE WING reminded us that the mafia plays by its own rules. One of those rules is to do whatever you can get away with to get your way! Catherine was naïve to believe that Nicolas would just let her have a casino project. She may have won the land title, but she can’t do anything with it if the Nafrece city council approves someone else’s redevelopment plan. The mob negotiates through violence too. Recent drought conditions at Lake Mead in Nevada gave us real-world examples of how the mafia plays for keeps for gambling and casinos. As the water receded, oil drums filled with concrete and skeletons surfaced. Is it believable that a mafia boss would make a city council member eat a rocket grenade? Yes!
Eve’s training retreat with Vipère before the death golf match was the right time for BIRDIE WING to show Eve’s origin before the story turns toward Japan. When characters are in a transition period, they naturally reflect on their past since the future is too uncertain. We saw what Eve has been doing for the last three years, but that amnesia plot point keeps us guessing about her past. But pay attention to this clue: Eve could speak and read the language in Nafrece. That points to a non-Japanese origin. Let’s see if BIRDIE WING stays consistent.
Heh.
BIRDIE WING starts directly from the end of the last episode. Construction crews will demolish Klein’s bar! Catherine’s casino project will redevelop the slums of Nafrece, meaning all those old buildings will disappear. Lily, Eve, and the rest only have a week to move out! The children adapted quickly to playing with toy construction vehicles. Klein worries about the authorities deporting the little ones.
The money from the bar and Eve’s golf matches pays for bribes, but they don’t have any savings to move away and start over. Ugh. Lily suggests she’s old enough to “work the night shift” as Klein did in the past. BIRDIE WING’s slums of Nafrece in the shadow of the mafia are places for gritty living. The problem is that there won’t be slums anymore under the casino construction project. Eve realizes her golf job for Rose and Catherine made their home disappear!
Catherine got the deed, but the Nafrece city council needs to approve the redevelopment project. She and her loyal council member appear confident. BIRDIE WING shows us high-stakes corruption so casually. Eve needs answers from Rose, but Rose is as cryptic as ever. The minor golf apparel seller has plans, you see. Rose makes sure Eve knows that if she asks Catherine for favors, the golf girl is stuck playing for the mob forever. How can she play Aoi legitimately on that track? Rose has plans for Eve, you see. Anri is a pure minion to Rose. You can tell from how Rose excludes Anri from her larger plots.
If Eve can’t get answers from Rose, how about Vipère? Ha! Eve only calls her Snake Woman. Uh oh. The mafia golfer needs to ask her own questions! Mob goons came to kill Vipère after losing the golf match, but they didn’t finish the job. Why? BIRDIE WING claims plots! The mob plays by the rules they acknowledge. If your contract doesn’t include killing council members, that was on you! Catherine spent too much time thinking about golf instead of old-fashioned mob methods. Eat a bazooka, old dude! Catherine’s game with the other mob boss Nicolas went to rematch status.
Oh, here’s Aoi to remind us of Eve’s stakes in her personal match. Eve needs to fight for her girlfriend! Oho. Vipère has resources. Like, offering extra tongue action to Nicolas’s head bodyguard! Har. The big mafia bosses want the minor bosses Catherine and Nicolas to resettle their dispute with a golf match. That’s the solution to everything in BIRDIE WING. Higher stakes this time around. Since Vipère lost for Nicolas last time, how about the better golfer? Catherine likes the golf rematch idea, but Eve is not on the menu. Who can beat her?
Fun, fun, fun! Vipère negotiated with Nicolas to let Eve be his champion! Two episodes later and the clients switched. I want to see Eve lounge on a yacht. Let’s make it happen, BIRDIE WING! Aw. Vipère wants to see Eve’s bullets again. The demolition line keeps getting closer to Klein’s bar. Lily needs to find a home for her Gundam kits! Mr. Robert, the golf course owner, could take them off her hands. Oh? Rose visited Klein to tell her to stay put for as long as possible. Eve will be missing for a few days too. The mafia golfer has plots behind the scenes.
Training montage with Coach Vipère. Eve looks good in tight-fitting athletic gear. Vipère has another hideout and has access to a junkyard. This is gritty slum golf practice. Ooh, flashback to Eve’s harsh, original training. A scarred guy named Leo showed up, drilled golf into her for three years, then disappeared. Mysterious! Even more mysterious – Eve is an amnesiac! The only thing she remembered was her name, Evangeline. Klein and Lily rescued Eve when Klein was only fourteen years old and hooking for the mob. BIRDIE WING started its story about Eve soon after Leo left. According to Eve’s math, Klein is only seventeen years old!
Epilogue after the end credits. Time to fight through golf! Back at Catherine’s golf course generator. Revealing Eve as Nicolas’s golfer was a dramatic moment but not as stunning as when Catherine’s golfer stepped up. Rose versus Eve in death golf!
