Erika surprised Komichi by walking on stage behind her. Erika would be Komichi's musical accompaniment! Belatedly, Erika realized that playing the piano meant she would have her back to Komichi's dance. She would miss her best friend's performance! Perhaps Erika would have a chance at another surprise.
The theme of Komichi's interpretative dance was her sports festival. Her classmates recognized moves from her cheerleading choreography. Komichi even threw in some fun references to fooling around in class. Minoru wanted more of that lip nibbling!
The episode also made Komichi's dance an excellent framing device for reliving her sports events. The tension of the swim relay matched her moves during the dance.
And then Erika surprised Komichi again! During the bridge of her song, a violin takes up the piano part, so Touko encouraged Erika to play both piano and violin for the accompaniment. Incredible! It felt like Erika and Komichi were performing for each other exclusively. Plus, Erika could watch Komichi's beautiful choreography.
The final movement of the dance captured the pivotal moment of the volleyball event. Komichi's team came back from a setback to put her in the perfect time and place to score championship-point. She stuck the landing! Class 1-3 were the overall champions of the Athletics Festival.
What a perfect day for Komichi and her classmates. Komichi and Erika made a memory that would last them a lifetime. And there was also all that hand-holding and red ribbons of fate floating around.
Komichi woke up on Monday wondering if it was all a dream. It all happened, alright. But there's plenty of time to make even more amazing memories. Komichi's friends are there to get started right away!
The end card showed Class 1-3 taking a group picture with Komichi and Erika at the end of their musical performance. The illustrator was the manga artist Hiro! I hope we see another year of Komichi Akebi in her sailor uniform.
