Nezuko was an active demon slayer team member investigating the Infinite Train. She worked for head pats from Tanjirou! In Inosuke's dream trap, Nezuko appeared as a loyal bunny.
The demon causing all the troubles on the train held the rank of Lower Six. He aspired to join the levels of the Upper Demons. He thought killing a Demon Slayer Pillar, like Rengoku, would gain him notoriety and prestige, enough to challenge and replace one of those in the upper rank. Tanjirou's Fire Dance attack ended that dream.
Unfortunately for the Demon Slayers, Akaza, the Upper Three Demon, arrived to fight Rengoku. Akaza wanted Rengoku to join him as a demon, so they could fight forever. Rengoku disagreed with that. Sadly, Rengoku gave up his life to keep Akaza clashing with him until dawn. Akaza realized Rengoku's plan would harm him and tried to escape. Tanjirou attempted to provoke Akaza into staying, but that didn't work. The young demon slayer gave him a sword to remember him by.
