The opening credits for Hakozume – Kouban Joshi no Gyakushuu (literally BOX GIRLS – Police Box Women Strike Back, but translated to Police in a Pod) show rookie female cop Kawai partners with former detective Sergeant Fuji as patrol police officers. The comedic slice-of-life anime presents jokes about civil servants, disillusionment with the public, and detectives looking down on regular cops.
Rookie cop Kawai wants to quit. She thought civil service would be a low-stress job with a steady salary, but she did not expect the long hours and verbal abuse that came with it. People are so rude when they get traffic citations! However, the arrival of knockout Sergeant Fuji made her shelve her resignation letter. For now. Fuji is a good cop with a bad attitude. That dichotomy added to her cover model exterior brings the comedy to life.
The first big joke with a message was how Fuji hated the representation of female police officers on public recruitment posters. By the end of the episode, she did the pose with the same smile on her face! Community outreach isn't just for the public. It helps the policewomen care about their local area too.
The end credits show Kawai and Fuji dressed up in many outfits for cultural and recreational reasons. That's confirmation on the slice-of-life genre for Hakozume.
