Restoration Plan No. 20 – “The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!”

Hmm.

The season finale for The Great Jahy felt like a slice-of-life OVA. The new character of Suu, Maou’s twin sister, quickly integrated into Jahy’s circle of friends. The formula for this show is that a new regular character gets slice-of-life comedy as soon as possible. Suu had her time to shine and show off her tsundere traits. Then Jahy’s restaurant plot ended even quicker. We had two-thirds of an episode left to relax, laugh, and say goodbye to our favorite characters.

I appreciated watching Kokoro and Saurva because they were absent from the dramatic finish of Maou and Suu’s story last week in The Great Jahy. Jahy came to love the human world through her relationship with the Store Manager and her friendship with Kokoro. We saw how her care extended to the other shop owners in the shopping district.

Saurva started her new attitude toward the human world through the Store Manager and the Landlady. That was like Jahy’s experience. The fun part of Saurva participating in the shrine procession and the other festival events was how Jahy had done the same thing. Saurva also received the recognition she had been craving in the Dark Realm. She didn’t need to defeat the Great Jahy to get fame and appreciation. She just needed to put herself out there with confidence. It takes a lot of confidence to wear a skimpy Carnival feather costume!

I laughed when I realized the local festival celebrated Tenma. The posters in the market where Jahy and Saurva carried the mikoshi (portable shrine) had 天魔祭 (tenmamatsuri) on them. According to Buddhist teaching, Tenma is the demon who tried to seduce Buddha with dreams of beautiful women. That sounds like Jahy, the deva of lasciviousness. The locals hold an annual festival for the Great Jahy!

Hey, we’re cleaning up from the last episode. Literally! The twin sisters of creation and destruction are sticking around to celebrate Jahy’s own restaurant. Hahaha, of course! Jahy forgot about that! Weird. Suu can only take shape around the Store Manager. Is Maou the same way, that she can only take shape near Kyouko? Ah, here’s Druj with her proposed locations for Craft Pub Jahy. Hm, hm, none of those places fit the atmosphere of a gastropub... Typical Druj. Jahy lets her handle it. Oh. This is how Jahy stays working at Craft Pub Maou in The Great Jahy. I hope Jahy gets a percentage from Druj’s upscale restaurant.

That’s the end of the story arc about the twin sisters of creation and destruction. Time to have fun at the shopping district’s festival. The portable shrine procession celebrates Tenma. He’s the demon of sensual desire in Buddhist mythology. Hey! That’s Jahy, the deva of lasciviousness in Zoroastrianism. Oh. We’re ending The Great Jahy season with Kokoro. She wasn’t present during all the Dark Realm stuff, so this is a healing moment for Jahy. Ha. Jahy will tag along with Kokoro to collect free stuff. Boo! Stinky boys ruin Jahy and Kokoro’s date. Here comes Jahy’s pride to rile herself up. I’m smiling so big at this. Jahy’s voice is the loudest celebrating herself! She won the children’s prize. What treasures are in that bag? Uh, that’s excellent loot for Kokoro, not so for the materialistic Jahy. I hope she shares the toys with Kokoro.

Yay! The Magnificent Saurva also shows up in The Great Jahy season finale. She’ll do anything for the Store Manager. Funny! Saurva works so hard celebrating a demon of desire. Wow, this Tenma Festival lasts all day and night. That’s right. The Landlady is pleasant to everyone except Jahy! She’ll be nice to you too, Saurva. Bang those drums, get pats on the head. What? There’s more? A lust demon festival should have Carnival outfits and samba. And Macho Samba! Hahaha! Jahy still can’t remember Saurva’s name.

Fireworks time. The whole cast is here. Jahy thinks she forgot something. Would that be like restoring the Dark Realm? Who says she didn’t? The Great Jahy was not defeated!

Final Thoughts.

The Great Jahy was a fine adaptation of a quirky slice-of-life comedy manga from Konbu Wakame. The beautiful character design of Jahy, wearing skimpy clothes to show off her dark skin, kept my interest throughout the series. Her short version’s oversized T-Shirt made me laugh. I liked how the anime had comedically themed background music to cue the audience’s expectations.

Besides slice-of-life comedy, The Great Jahy fits into more anime genres. It was a reverse isekai, yuri harem, and a magical girl farce. During the first half of its run, I suspected the show would change into a parody of other genres because its odd omakes took on sci-fi and pro wrestling. The anime settled into a more comfortable flow of slice-of-life antics as the cast grew bigger. The Great Jahy fits into the yuri harem genre because there were no hetero love interests. The recurring male characters were a cross-dressing macho man and the cop who arrested Jahy. All the primary relationships had yuri subtexts.

The Great Jahy’s premise was solid, but I had concerns if it could sustain its comedic energy. The anime’s nonstandard number of episodes, twenty, affected early episodes. The extra comedy bits felt like the show needed to fill time. The Tokyo Olympics affected its schedule, like Fena: Pirate Princess (Kaizoku Oujo). The Great Jahy had more material than one calendar season, but unfortunately, it did not have enough for two. The anime started to click after the introduction of Kyouko as a recurring character. The producers never answered who Jahy’s guitar-shredding neighbor was. I’m still curious.

I like Jahy’s sexy design, but I found it difficult to view her as a sex object. Her voice actor, Oozora Naomi, has experience portraying funny and sexy characters, like Hana Uzaki from Uzaki-chan and Satania from Gabriel Dropout. But Jahy spent the majority of her screen time as a first-grader. Her mental age didn’t change between forms, so when she was in her adult form in a strappy outfit with thigh-high boots, I still saw her as the girl in an oversized T-Shirt.

The season’s ending made The Great Jahy complete as an anime. The manga continues monthly, but there’s nothing else to resolve since the Dark Realm only existed around the Demon Lord. Konbu Wakame has two other series that have chances for anime adaptation. Would you like to see a flat tan maid bothering a shota master?
