Inari, in the opening and closing credits, is a force of beauty and nature as a fox spirit who is still frustrated by the cleverness of Inugami the tanuki spirit. It's an old tale in Japanese folklore.
Inugami, a private detective, knew that he would need to introduce Kabane, an immortal half-demon, to Inari the fox spirit who controls the police department at some point. He accurately predicted that Inari would take advantage of Kabane in some way, but he didn't expect to gain her subordinate Kon to work at his detective agency with his other young charges. Shiki already had trouble teaching Kabane the ways of human culture, but now he needs to deal with a fox spirit who could betray his colleagues at any moment. These spirits have interesting circumstances.
