Primos Roglic became the first rider to defend his Vuelta title back to back since 2005 when Roberto Heras won his third Vuelta in a row. However, Roglic became the first rider in Vuelta history to defend both his red and green jersey two years in a row. Chris Froome won both red and green jersey at the 2017 Vuelta but opted not to defend them after winning the 2018 Giro d'Italia and placing 3rd at the 2018 Tour de France.
