Elaina came to a city with lots of helpful mages. When an official turned her away from touring a magic academy, its students started chasing her all over the place to bring her back there. It turns out, this is the famous town where the famous Fran the Stardust Witch teaches magic at the famous magic academy. Fran's famous!
The frame of this story is Elaina's memory of meeting her teacher again after many years after she found a famous book starring her in another town. Fran recounted to Elaina how she misplaced the first year of her traveling diary after she became embarrassed at how it wasn't as good as The Adventures of Nike. It is now clear that Elaina's mother is Nike, Fran is her apprentice, and explains why Elaina's dad had such a stressed out reaction to his daughter wanting to travel like that wandering witch.
Fran had fun showing Elaina around her city and gave her a wonderful parting gift of making a memory she could always hold close to her heart. Travelers can't carry many things around with them, but it doesn't take up any space to hold a cherished memory of someone you love. That's a fine lesson.
Elaina continued her travels with a smile on her face and she recalled that memory of seeing Fran again when she came upon a city that celebrated a different wandering witch named Fran.
