Kazuya and Ruka have been "provisionally" dating almost a year and he still doesn't know why she likes him. She hasn't told him and he hasn't asked. Both these people are terrible and they're in a terrible situation.
After running into Kazuya and Sumi on their rental date last episode, Mami discovered that Chizuru was a rental girlfriend too. Without explicitly telling her why, Mami implied threats about telling Kazuya's friends about their fake relationship. Mami only wants Kazuya now that it looks like other girls want him, especially girls who aren't supposed to genuinely like him.
In a huge copout of an episode because this story picked up a second season for some reason, Mami couldn't admit to Chizuru that she liked Kazuya, Chizuru couldn't admit to Kazuya that she liked him, and Kazuya chickened out in his love confession to Chizuru. Panicky liar needs to lie in a panic. The sad sack gets every emotionally inflicted distress he deserves.
The epilogue scenes point to a frustrating status quo with a revelation that Mami has a sugar daddy boyfriend she and her family don't like. Meanwhile, Kazuya still rents Chizuru for dates to satisfy both their grandmother's expectations. There was no progress at all except for frustrating deeper unconfessed emotions and other girls thrown in for complications. If the second season has Ruka graduating high school and going to the same college as Kazuya, I'll just watch for the beach or spa trip episode, because that girl needs to give us the fanservice in compensation for this dumpster fire.
