The last time the Vuelta overlapped with the Giro was when the Spanish Grand Tour used to be the first Grand Tour of the cycling season running from the end of April to the middle of May. In 1986, the Vuelta ran from April 22nd to May 13th, while the Giro ran from May 12th to June 2nd. Starting in 1995, the Vuelta a España has been the last Grand Tour of the cycling season, running the last three weeks of Summer. The COVID-19 truncated season of 2020 put all three Grand Tours running in the span of just over 10 weeks, with the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España overlapping in the Giro's final week with Vuelta's shortened program of only 18 stages starting on the Tuesday of October 20th.
