After the abandonment of their team leader Egan Bernal to back and knee pain, Ineos Grenadiers had been trying for a stage win in the Alps with Richard Carapaz. The Ecuadorian had come close, while collecting KOM points along the way. On Stage 18, with the help of his team mate super domestique Michal Kwiatkowski riding in his 10th tour, the two managed to escape their breakaway companions and put Carapaz into the polka-dot jersey.
Unfortunately, ties are very rare in bike races these days considering how accurate photography instruments have become, so while Carapaz was happy to win the KOM jersey for the next stage and let Kwiatkowski take the stage victory, the slowest photo finish in recent memory had to confirm that the Polish former world champion did indeed win his first ever Tour de France stage.
