Hina and Natsumi learned from Sayaka-sensei that the Breakwater Club has to pass one more physical exam than the rest of the school. It's something that worries Makoto greatly and it relates to using the swimming pool!
Because the Breakwater Fishing Club spends a lot of time near the water, they all need to practice floating while wearing clothes. That's not surprising. What was surprising was Sayaka-sensei's trim body and sleek swimsuit. She claims she was a lifeguard in college and even certified. That makes sense since she's now a school nurse.
Hina and Natsumi quickly got the hang of just back floating, but Makoto's fear of the water made her panic. Yuuki complained that she was no better than last year's failed test.
Now we know part of the reason why Makoto wears a life vest all the time. Sayaka-sensei was proud of a new thing she wanted the girls to use while fishing – an emergency life belt. It's like an airbag for a car, except it uses a CO2 cartridge to immediately inflate the belt. Makoto was happiest to have a more inconspicuous fashion accessory.
Sayaka-sensei wanted Makoto to be the one to demonstrate how the life belt works, but Makoto still fretted because of her fear of drowning. She convinced herself to try by promising not to put her friends through a scary scenario of saving her from drowning.
So, Makoto jumped! Right on top of Sayaka-sensei! The life belt worked! The other girls wanted to try and jumped in too. Right on top of Sayaka-sensei again! Then she got mad because she only wanted one girl to try the belt. The reason was that they only had one replacement CO2 cartridge, and they're not cheap.
After replacing the expensive air cartridges, the girls were ready to fish again after the rainy season. Makoto still wears her life vest, though. Unfortunately, Hina made a new friend in an annoying heron who kept stealing her catch and release fish. She saw fishing line tangled in its feet and decided on a major operation to remove it. She didn't want to save the bird per se, she just couldn't stand seeing that tangled thread! They successfully removed the line, but that heron still bothers Hina for her unwanted fish.
