Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru Kan - Episode 2 - 10 Second Anime

Yukino talks with her sister about moving back home. Iroha seeks the Service Club’s help in organizing a prom.

Episode 2 – “That Key Was Never Handled Until Today”

Hmm.

I’ve been following this story for a long time, but I still have no concrete idea on why Yukino moved out of her parent’s house. It hasn’t been awfully long that she’s lived at the high-rise with Haruno, but now she feels ready to address whatever issue she had with her mother. As a viewer, I don’t appreciate how the storyline keeps everything so vague as a device to make the family issue appear more serious. At this point, I just hope it’s a serious enough life issue that would cause a high school girl and her mother to stop them from enduring the other’s presence in a huge family compound. All these ambiguous issues about the future are so emotionally tense in Oreigaru.

Speaking of tense, Yui discovered that her love triangle has three legs. Yukino has always shown an amorphous and incipient attachment to Hachiman, but it never seemed like full-blown romantic feelings like Yui has for him. Well, we know she has them now. I remember my own high school days where having a picture of your crush was an especially important thing so you could stare at the person’s face and wistfully wish for some movement in the relationship. Inexperience with love and feelings leads kids either not to be aware they need to make the move or be risk-averse and scared of rejection. I think Yukino is on the lacking knowledge path while Yui is on the averse to risk path. In a traditionally cultural way, it’s up the man, Hachiman, to make the move for all three of them. Until then, Oreigaru will keep filling up those wistful emotions until you feel it in your throat.

Heh.

Yukino complains that Haruno only listens to her when she’s drunk. Yukino wants to move back home. She’s ready to talk to her mother about her future, or whatever it is they fought about. Yes, let’s everyone be clear about what they’re talking about for once in Oreigaru. Yui wants to help Yukino pack; Hachiman approves in his own gruff way.

Aha. Haruno ambushes Hachiman. The older ladies in Oreigaru like to talk to the overly self-conscious hero. Haruno called it – Hachiman always acts like a big brother because he is one. Interesting. Haruno claims she can’t get drunk because she’s too detached. So, how she’s clinging to Hachiman means she’s doing it on purpose. She thinks Hachiman is the same way.

Back to the present and Yui found out that Hachiman pays attention to her. He’s always been to observant and perceptive. He just never admits it. Yay! Shizuka-sensei! And she’s gone. Why did we need to have this scene with Hachiman trying to get the key to the Service Club’s room when Yukino already had it? Foreshadowing?

Ah. Here comes Iroha with the drama for the Oreigaru season. Iroha impresses Yui with an expensive projector and not paying for it. Hachiman is all of us in paying attention to the important parts of the prom queen scene. Har. Iroha wants Hachiman to repeat a year so he can be her prom king!

Iroha wants to put on a prom, which Japanese schools usually don’t have, and Yukino wants to try and organize one for the graduating seniors. Big production in 3 months, when Iroha wants one to be ready for her own graduation in 2 years? She just wants to be prom queen… What could go wrong? Ah. Iroha’s true motivation is to make the prom a new tradition for the senior appreciation party, so even an unsuccessful one this year is enough for groundwork. Yukino likes that.

The hard promise for Yukino to keep is asking for help when she needs it. That event will show how much she’s grown up doing work for the Service Club.

Enough of that external excuse to showcase the real drama for Oreigaru. Yui, show us the next event in making the love triangle an even messier mushy mess. There it is! Yukino has a secret picture of her and Hachiman. It’s proof she has romantic feelings for him, even if she can’t articulate it to him, Yui, or herself. It’s hard being friends with people who are all in love with each other. And now, Yui has a secret that she pried into her friend's private things. Drama!

Next time on Oreigaru, did they put a prom together in that short a time?
