Chris Froome, the defending champion of the Tour, is known for taking time against his opponents through climbing and time trials, but on Stage 8 he gained time and the yellow jersey by attacking the downhill finish in the super-tuck position, eventually crossing the line first into Bagnères-de-Luchon.
