10 Second Anime - Non Non Biyori Repeat - Episode 6

Natsumi gets along well with Hotaru as they play with creepy crawly things.

Episode 6 - "We got along well with Hotaru."

Heh.

It became a big deal that Hotaru's name is spelled with the same kanji that means firefly (蛍, hotaru). The girls couldn't play with Hotaru's fireworks, but they could enjoy the firework show from the fireflies. Nice connection that worked with the overall theme for the episode.

The word for bug in Japanese (虫, mushi), doesn't just mean insect or arachnid, but anything that crawls around on the ground. The character can be found in compound words for lizard, snake, octopus, so equating a gecko with a cicada nymph, grasshopper, newt or firefly makes sense.

The theme of the episode was playing with creepy crawlers to get along with Hotaru. She's a city girl, so she's more used to watching whatever anime is on at a certain time instead of playing with bugs. Natsumi the countryside expert would necessarily have the least in common with Hotaru, but she managed to find a connection with her.

Natsumi learned to just admit when she hadn't seen a show instead of trying to fake it.

Natsumi made a nice comparison between Hotaru and her sister Komari. She thought twice about tickling her ribs like she would with her sister, but in trying to snatch a gecko off Hotaru's back, it looked like she was attempting to sneak in some teasing anyway. That Hotaru thought the little lizard was cute made the exclamation point even funnier when they found Komari freaking out over a gecko in the classroom.

No, Renge. You can't catch onions with a fishing pole. This scene became important for the firefly firework show because the kids ended up using wet blades of grass to entice them to land closer to them and it looked very much like fishing for lightning bugs.

You could tell Nii-san was very excited to see fireworks because he started twirling his pencil really fast.

Aw. The girls tried to make Hotaru feel better after seeing that disappointing parachute firework, but Renge couldn't keep it up. It was just sooo lame. Kazu-nee had the proper solution for missing out on Hotaru no hanabi (Hotaru's fireworks). Hotaru no hanabi (Fireflies' fireworks)! That was a perfect example of summertime healing anime.
