Hachiman's and Yukino's two-pronged attack spur the Christmas Event committee to action. Yukino has family issues related to her birthday during New Year's.
Heh.
This episode had to deal with the aftermath of Iroha's confession to Hayato. I liked the use of Iroha's tendency to rely on Hachiman to carry things that are too heavy for her as an invitation to console her in his own way. Iroha had her own confession to give to Hachiman, though.
It was one thing to hear Hachiman complain about buzzword bingo to himself, but to push it in people's faces out in the open, especially in a culture that hates confrontation, took courage. Iroha relied on the support of the Hachiman and Yukino, but she still made her school's preference known and stood up to the other school. Yukino stood the issue on its head by asking them to stop wasting their time by playing upper management pretend games. They don't have to get along - they just have to put on a Christmas show.

Because she heard his plaintive wish for "something genuine," Iroha was inspired to act on her attraction to Hayato. Embarrassing! Now we know why she was blushing so hard when he opened the door of the club room to chase after Yukino.
Funny how she mentioned that having someone reject you makes them think about you more, when she had been rejecting Hachiman whenever he gave her a genuine compliment. Hachiman better take responsibility for his actions!
Iroha was no longer part of the opening credits for the closing shot of the Service Club. Hachiman had completed his mission - he made Iroha President of the Student Council. May President Iroha's rule be long and benevolent!
All that was left after the double smackdown of President Buzzword was to appreciate the Christmas Event put on by the two schools. Yui had her own role to play in selling Hachiman's and Yukino's points about these useless meetings - the two schools didn't have to work on every aspect of the event together and it left them room to have distinctive impacts so as to have a sense of ownership and accomplishment. Things usually go well if you have pride in them. Recruiting Hachiman's old schoolmate to agree with her was what broke the stalemate and moved them forward.
There's no such thing as too little Saki.
It was also a sad bit of commentary about Japanese culture that so many senior citizens don't have their own families to take on the traditional roles of spending time with them. That the change in demographics and culture over there has permeated pop culture so much as to be included in an anime episode shows how it has become common knowledge.
Yukino started making tea again, and Hachiman got his own cup. With Pan-san on it, of course. Things in the Service Club found a better normal.
We've spent almost the entire season dealing with Hachiman's issues, so it's a welcome change to end the season with a focus on the girls.
Ah, not Yui, though. Hachiman and Yui went shopping for Yukino's birthday.
Such a harmless excursion gets all fouled up when Haruno joins the party. It's also a sneaky way of introducing the next part of the story dealing with Yukino's family.
Wow. Yukino looks just like her mom. And what was that terrified look that she flashed at Hachiman about regarding her birthday? It looked like Haruno and Hayato both knew what Mrs. Yukinoshita was talking about.
Komachi is still best imouto. Not only did she give Yukino a new insult for Hachiman (his own name!), but she made sure to ditch them so they could spend their own time together. She did that to Yui and Hachiman too. Always looking out for her big brother.
Hachiman thought Yui and Yukinoshita had fulfilled his request, but they said they hadn't yet. Even Yui got what Yukino meant. Don't be such a Hachiman, Hachiman!
Hachiman's scene with his former crush was quite nice. She reached out to him after he became much more assertive, by pretending not to care (throwing out game and negging her, not that I know anything about pickup artist terminology, nope). Using the vending machine where she gave him milk-tea but he now prefers black coffee showed that he had changed since she last knew him and that they had different tastes and would not have worked out anyway. A good way to have closure on one of his embarrassing issues.
Hmm.
We've been getting hints about Yukino's family situation for a long time, but we never got anything solid about why she's living apart from them. If we're really going to focus on Yukino, I'll be glad, because I've been curious about her situation and I've been waiting for some answers. I'm looking forward to how this unfolds and how Haruno and Hayato are involved.
