Issei rescues Rias with one simple word. Some new developments mark the Season Finale.
Meh.
Look. I get it. After all the arcs with Koneko, Akeno and saving Asia, we needed to have one for Rias. Even better, the producers planted foreshadowing of Loki's curse with how Issei went berserk because he was afraid a girl could never really love him after dying at the hands of a fallen angel. But... don't give me this crap at the end. Issei winning a fight has never been about him shouting loud enough that stuff just happens. That's what generic harem comedies do. Not DxD. And getting beat up until something just happens to change the battle is what other generic harem comedies do. Not DxD. And then having the characters conveniently forget the anime original plot developments so as not to spoil the source material. Meh. Not a good ending to the show.
Heh.
So how did Loki gain control of that fragment of Issei's armor anyway? Wasn't he locked away and some random soldier found a red rock that came to life? Bah, this show is over anyway.
That's right Issei. You better remember the first names of your harem members. It could literally save your life one day. Oh, like today.
"Say my name, say my name..." That's enough of that.
Rossweisse got left behind so much, they just made it permanent.
Final rook get! Because Rias offered her better term life insurance! Whispers of a devil, indeed.
Transfer students and new teachers come to that school so easily. Devil power.
They mentioned the Oppai Dragon, much to Ddraig's sorrow, but then they gave Issei a children's show!
Song lyrics by Azazel, Music by Sir Zechs, choreography by Serafall. Of course. Oppai!
I guess that other Satan guy gave Issei something useful - a long range attack that doesn't require him to enter Juggernaut Drive.
Geh.
Plot holes and premises aside, the audience's reward for this travesty of a story arc was Rias shouldering almost all of the NSFW fanservice. At least an arc focused on Rias reminded us who has the best breasts.
Can't have a trip down memory lane without a naked Rias waking up next to Issei for the first time. This is one of the few times I've ever broken my no flashback images rule.
Not even the use of Dress Break or Oppailingual Technique. Just saying Rias' name like she wanted.
Naked flying embrace. Fine, I forgive you DxD, but try a little harder next time than having Issei shout a lot and get beat up for no reason other than not wanting to hit a girl. Issei had other techniques than shouting and hitting. Come on.
Deep breath. I forgot that I forgave them already, just like Issei and Rias forgetting they shared a kiss after Issei used her name instead of "Club President."
Issei's Harem assemble!
Xenovia as a sloppy sleeper still makes me chuckle.
But we all knew why we were grinding through the last two episodes.
Issei and Rias finally had a moment alone that they could remember. He didn't say her name, though.
That was alright. The curse was broken anyway.
That's right, Issei. Rias has the best breasts. Why don't you tell her out loud for once?
Hmm.
All I have to say is thank goodness the rescue was over before the first half of the episode. We had lots of fun epilogue type stuff for the end of the season and I can just forget the last episode and half.
Final Thoughts.
The third season of DxD started so well. We had great character arcs that not only explored their pasts and how they resolved them with the present circumstances, but the overall story of Chaos Brigade exploiting the current crisis of the Belief Systems at war and the anarchy that might ensue if any of the Heaven and Hell magic systems were overthrown as well.
Unfortunately, the flow of the source material meant that if they had included the tournament style plot of the Rating Games, we would have ended with the Asia rescue and be left without any focus on Rias. The solution, the Loki curse tied to a fragment of Issei's Dragon Armor, was a neat solution, but it was rushed and had a completely useless episode 11. Yelling and then yelling louder is not how Issei usually wins a fight.
Still, up until then, we had a great show full of uncensored fanservice, fun comedy, and sweet family moments for Koneko, Akeno and Asia. I'll just choose to forget the resolution of the anime only rescue of Rias in the Dimensional Gap. If Issei and Rias can't remember it, why should I care? I hope the disks have some good specials to help me with my forgetfulness.
