The Service Club finds a perfect spot for a love confession, but Hachiman makes sure things don't go exactly as planned.

Heh.

These cultural tourist places always seem to have a haunted house these days. Saki was not a fan, and neither was Hachiman because she was ruining his jacket by clinging on to him so tightly. She looks like a bad girl but is just a regular girl with a tough exterior.

 

Yukino's class seems to be very protective of their princess, especially from the infamous Hachiman.

 

That bamboo corridor was a great place to make a love confession, but all sorts of other confessions happened there too.

 

Yui and Yukino appear surprised that Hachiman can be a regular guy with a big appetite.

Quick! Feed him some more! Maybe he'll eat it too! Hachiman didn't appreciate being treated like the neighborhood dog.

 

Hachiman claimed he hung out with the dudes in his room to give Hina "material" for her fujoshi fantasies, but Hina said it's no good if he doesn't have any pictures or video. Somehow it was Tobe who was flashing the crack.

 

 

Hmm.

It wasn't an accident that Hina came to the Service Club right after Tobe did when he requested help in setting up his love confession to Hina. It was Hina's way of signaling to Yukino, Yui and especially Hachiman that she's not ready for a relationship and actually enjoys friends who can tolerate her Boys' Love hobby openly.

 

Hayato, the leader of their clique wanted to support his friend Tobe, but didn't want the group fractured by a rejection. He didn't know how to dissuade Tobe from expressing his feelings for Hina. From the girls' side, Yumiko also knew where Hina was coming from, and was resentful that Hachiman and his group were interfering. Somebody's feelings were going to get hurt no matter what happened, so it would have to be an outsider who needed to defuse the situation.

 

Unfortunately, Hachiman doesn't defuse situations. He makes them explode and jumps on the bomb to take the damage, so everyone else can see the fallout and use him as an anti-example for their actions. He did that here by making a confession ahead of Tobe so Hina could express to someone else how she was feeling. Any rejection is always taken personally, even if it's not meant to be, so Hachiman took the hit instead of Tobe, so they could preserve their clique.

 

Hayato and Hina knew what Hachiman intended with his action, but Yukino and Yui were surprised and offered their own confessions after the fact.

The girls aren't so straightforward with their feelings yet toward Hachiman. Yukino is similar to him in that she doesn't express her inner world outwardly, but in contrast, Yukino may not be as self aware about her emotions. She could only say that watching Hachiman get rejected made her angry and she couldn't put what she was feeling into words. Yui was much more emotionally aware and told Hachiman never to do that again. Mixed in with her anger, sadness and empathetic pain was the confession that she cared for him and didn't want to see him hurt, even if it was a false confession. Also, probably the same as Yukino, Yui did not want to see Hachiman confess to another girl.

 

Hachiman may be self aware, but he has closed himself off from receiving feelings, which is why seeing Yukino and Yui express their feelings is a surprise to him. Yui also made him realize his own hypocrisy in trying to preserve a clique's balance of relationships when he has expressed his own disdain for how little lies need to be told to keep friendships from fracturing under harsh truths. Hachiman doesn't want to admit it, but he has already started to care for the people in his class. Maybe part of Yui's and Yukino's emotional disappointment in Hachiman is that he hasn't expressed his fondness for them in an outward conventional way.

 

At the very least, Yukino and Yui have made it clear that they don't want Hachiman to choose solutions that further establish his pariah status in the school. That hurts them too, not because they have to associate with him, but because they would like others to know how much he has already helped the school and so many of their classmates. Hachiman can't go on hiding his nice guy nature forever.
