10 Second Anime - Yowamushi Pedal - Grande Road - Episode 17

Yowamushi Pedal - Grande Road - Episode 17

Midousuji catches and passes the group behind the leaders. Manami joins him in the chase as Makishima sends Onoda to follow.

Heh.

Midousuji didn't know what to make of Ishigaki calling him "pure-hearted." A better phrasing might have been "single-minded," because Midousuji only has one thought in his head, and that's to win the race. He can't even conceive of other racers having other motivations, so he tries to interpret their actions as being some kind of subterfuge related to that singular purpose. Hey, everybody wants to win the race, but sometimes those aspirations are placed on someone else.

Sohoku definitely follows that kind of thinking. Using the image of a hand pushing a teammate forward, like those kinetic ball toys, they keep pushing their hopes onto the last man pedaling.

Midousuji is right - Manami's smile is different than Onoda's. We even saw that when Onoda and Manami were looking at Toudou and Makishima attack each other relentlessly. Onoda enjoyed seeing all the climbing action and riding with other people. Manami appeared frustrated that he was still on a leash.

Hilarious that Midousuji called Manami a monster. Figures, though. He also pronounced him "not disgusting," because he also wants to win for himself.

When will the Sohoku guys learn that Onoda likes passing people on the right? He did that with Teshima during the training camp and he made Makishima almost despair.

I guess we ran out of episode time. Makishima gets a deathbed scene instead of a montage.

Again, Makishima called out Onoda's first name in a desperate situation like on the first day when he was able to fly to Toudou. Fujoshi swoon at the intimacy...

Ishigaki didn't get a death montage either.

Fukutomi set Manami's friend Miyahara straight about his tardiness. He's late for everything. She should have been used to this by now.

Ha! Leave it Toudou to notice a girl first.

Hakone's cycling team may be strict, but they're not sticklers for rules. Shinkai was right - Fukutomi likes weirdos as long as their strong. That's a different kind of strictness.

Cycling Porn.

This episode we finally get to see Makishima's Time up against Midousuji's De Rosa. Too bad Makishima's legs were all used up attacking Toudou. We also see Manami's Look and his Tacx style bottle cages. I'm not a fan of those Tacx designs. I used a couple of them for many years, but the tab at the bottom, even though it's replaceable, broke on me after hitting some bad potholes. I went back to my old aluminum wire cages. Nothing's going to break those things.

How nice for Ishigaki's Raleigh to land softly because he was going so slowly up a hill. Crashing during a race is usually much more expensive and it's pretty rare to find some soft grass to land on too.

Hmm.

We're not done yet with the character study on Manami. From past episodes, we saw how Miyahara got her sickly next door neighbor to do something active and he fell in love with road cycling. His manic smile isn't one to be too enthusiastic about, since it is a self-centered one, focusing on his feeling alive by being near death and enjoying the outside environment exciting his senses. That's very different than Onoda's smile, which is based on riding with and for his friends and also just his experience with singing anime songs at the top of his lungs. He's having fun instead of trying to feel alive.

Midousuji planned things so assiduously to win, but at this point in the race, he has no information on Manami. He's going to learn about another of Manami's monster-like powers - attacking when an opportune tailwind forms up. Perhaps during this bit of drama we'll find out how Midousuji fixed that crack in his tooth. He could have shaved himself, but he's not going to perform self-dentistry. Right?
