Naruto Shippuuden - Episode 398
The night before the 2nd part of the Chuunin Exams reveals interesting characters and subplots. Fuu wants to make friends.
Heh.
Protect the food at all costs! Whoops! The loudest guy complaining about being hungry just had to be the one to spill it all over the floor. I thought Choji was better than that.
I like that the hero of this filler arc is Neji. It's not that surprising since the whole arc started off as the back story to why Hinata was praying that Neji's spirit would protect Naruto from dying. Still, the story feels like the better drawn version of Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth anime from a couple of years ago. You even have Gai-sensei being super emotional about how great these kids are.
Naturally, we have to watch out for Fuu the Jinchuuriki, because she is not chuunin level, but just wants to hang out with other kids and play. She loudly proclaims that she wants to make a hundred friends. I suppose we'll find out the reason for the specificity on that number.
Lee found another "splendid ninja" who can stop his attack with just physical strength. I liked how Lee apologized for sounding arrogant, but it's not bragging if he's telling the truth that no ordinary ninja could easily stop his kick like that. This Shira kid of the Sand Village left him with a good aphorism that fits Lee's personality too, "Determination never betrays you." Gai might just say, "you need guts!"
This demon desert has some big animals too like the Leaf Village's forest of death. Fuu thinks it's fun to play with big scorpions...
Hmm.
The subplots around the Hidden Rain and the insurgency of the Sand got a bit more serious. I'm sure the Leaf ninjas will help Gaara out, strengthening their friendship. Finding out about Akatsuki is the bigger deal for Kakashi.
Fuu fits the jinchuuriki mold of Naruto and Killer B - loud fools who just want attention so they can make friends. It's nice to see the contrast between those Tailed-Beast hosts and the moody solitary types like Gaara. The Six-Tail's host Utakata (the bubble blowing guy) also fit the moody loner type. It's going to be hard for Fuu to make a hundred friends during the exams now that there's only 27 other kids, and that will soon be whittled down to 12 after the 2nd round.
The Sand kids would appear to have an advantage playing in their home turf, but you never know how things play out. I'm ready for Lee to show his guts.
