Junketsu no Maria - Episode 1
"The Chastity of Maria" (English "Maria the Virgin Witch") is the story of Maria, a young witch in France who interferes with local wars and gets teased by her familiars for her virginity.
First Thoughts.
Another medieval show with a sexy young magic user showing off Middle Ages battle mechanics and ribald humor? Sign me up! What got me first about the show was the owl familiar Artemis the Succubus complaining about walking bowlegged, feeling like her hips are about to crack, and having a sore jaw. Apparently there's a lot of work for sex demons right before a big battle. The punchline was how innocent Maria was about her own familiar's "services." What's more, she basically pulled a whole dragon out of her cauldron because some young lad kissed her hand. I was agape when that dragon just popped out of there! The kicker was how Maria wanted to avoid the fate of The Pucelle, which is what the French call Joan of Arc. Pucelle means maiden, virgin, etc, and one of Joan's monikers was the Maiden of Orleans. But it wasn't the burning at the stake that Maria was afraid of; it was the test of virginity. Hah! This first episode definitely impressed me.
Heh.
I was tickled to see the other witches hanging out in a tree to watch the battle as if they were a flock of birds. How they treated the British witch also pointed out how they have no national loyalties.
The sub-head for the show is Sorcière de gré, pucelle de force, which is roughly translated from the French as the willful witch, the maiden of strength. Gré is a French word that means many things depending on context, but it mainly deals with an individual's intention. In Maria's case, it refers to her doing things on her own without consulting anyone first. Not exactly selfish, not exactly doing things on a whim, just that she acts on her own and does what she wants.

The mercenaries were only concerned with gathering prisoners of war so they can get paid the ransom. All very civilized and transactional.
Artemis in owl form made a grand entrance.
All fluffy and bouncy like she is. She is going to steal the show from Maria. Plus, she already has that busty onee-san attitude that makes all the young girls blush.
I liked how the other witches complained when Maria showed up, as if that kind of thing happens all the time.
Geh.
I think I may have found mai waifu for the season.
Fua-fua and boin-boin. Then add in the white patent leather strappy outfit...
Hmm.
I was not expecting this show to be so fun. We'll have to see how the second episode goes, but Maria the Virgin Witch just made a very short list to be one of my featured 10 Second Anime shows for the Winter season. I'm looking forward to next time.
