Machimiya, the Hiroshima ace, tries to demoralize Kinjou and Fukutomi. Sohoku and Hakone form an alliance on the road, while Machimiya seeks to demonstrate the power of the peloton.

Heh.

Creepy. This Machimiya con artist is creepy. Claiming that he's stealing people's luck by touching them, while also claiming the luck comes from how many stars they have. I bet the fujoshi are jealous, though. He held Kinjou's hand and rubbed Fukutomi's biceps. Creepy.

Are you kidding me? It took 44 episodes before somebody figured out they could use the power of the peloton to catch breakaways? These Japanese kids really don't understand race tactics.

Interesting that Machimiya tried to "steal" Kinjou's "stars" from his hands and Fukutomi's from his arms. I know that Fukutomi likes to say he's "strong," so that might be the connection we're supposed to make. I'm not sure what Kinjou's "strength" is supposed to be in hands. Maybe that he never lets go of whomever he catches?

Ha! Way to break Machimiya's confidence game on the leaders by Onoda there. The most important thing you need in a bike race? Your bike! Of course... right?

Onoda is wrong, though. You need to get hopped up on nakama power!

While the Hakone and Sohoku guys form a group of 8 to catch their leaders, Imaizumi is having a hard time trying to catch Shinkai's wheel.

That guy is fast...

Alright, this 3rd stage is trying to set up a battle between 8 guys and the rest of the peloton. As if it took some weirdo with strange charisma to become the patron. At least we know what that weird thing he does with his hands is about now. He's a praying mantis.

I expect we'll come back to this image a few times during the rest of the 3rd stage.

Oh, it's the staggered start that makes the first guy over the finish line the winner overall. This Machimiya guy is going to ride the power of the peloton and his idea of luck to get him a higher place finish than his third from last year.

Onoda smiled pretty big when there were just a few guys riding with him. Now that there's eight, he can barely contain his glee. Besides, the Hakone guys are great.

Hmm.

Manami is going to factor big on this third day. The way Toudou and Arakita were impressed by the look in his eyes means that this is on a higher level than they've seen so far. No lazy smile on Manami when he focuses. And Manami has already sniffed the wind, and his "power," if you want to think about it that way, is going to bring him a nice tailwind on that long climb when he needs to attack.

The first part of Stage 3 is going to be the peloton versus the 8 guys of Hakone and Sohoku trying to reach their leaders. The leaders have about a 15 minute lead on the peloton. Will the main pack swallow up the chasers before they reach their leaders? Or will everything fall apart on that big climb because that mantis magician sucked all the stars out of Kinjou and Fukutomi? Or maybe they'll do the most important thing, according to Onoda: ride their bikes.

Cycling porn.

Man, the hand drawn bikes look terrible compared to the CGI models. We've got Onoda falling down at the standing start, which even pros still do, more pedaling action, a whole bunch of our usual bike brands in lots of different paint schemes, and the power of the peloton illustrated.

I have no idea how these Japanese kids think that only desperate people would form a peloton. Maybe it's because of the staggered start. The pro races all start at the same time after a neutralized section, so they're already together and conserve their energy as they let the breakaway form. As the race nears the finish, then they ramp up and catch the few out front. The rule of thumb is to aim for a minute back of those guys by the 10 km mark. Because there's so many guys in the pack, the ones breaking the wind can do almost full sprints for a few dozen seconds before letting some fresher guy take up the lead. Rotating all those guys lets the protected riders breathe easy until they have to unleash their own sprints to win the race. Of course, in actuality, it's only 3 to 4 teams who actually do any work for the peloton, sometimes only one for an entire day, so that's how this Machimiya is conning the large group while his whole Hiroshima team won't do any work at all.
