Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei - Episode 19

A new story arc begins with Chinese illegal aliens infiltrating Japan. Tatsuya takes on the challenges of the Philosopher's Stone and Nuclear Fusion.

Heh.

Lots of yellow, golden eyes among the Chinese infiltrators. Ancient magic will be an important key to the story, especially when a Chinese Relic has a chance of being a Philosopher's Stone. Mikihiko and Mizuki look to be featured as well.

Mizuki seems to be in charge of choosing daring outfits, and even helping Miyuki pick out an apron Tatsuya might like.

Miyuki calls her stepmother "that  person." No love lost there, although it looks like Sayuri is a little jealous or resentful that Miyuki pays more attention to Tatsuya than to her.

The show made a point to show Sayuri is not very neat in stacking her shoes near the foyer, which served as a bit of foreshadowing that she does not pay attention to detail, which might explain why she's carrying around an important piece of ancient tech without any regard to security. I hope we see more of her, because she's tripping all my busty onee-san flags.

The story keeps building on the things we've seen before, such as the squad that tried to take the Magatama from Sayuri had the magic jamming rings from the first arc, and Tatsuya's magic sniping from the second arc.

So, do all BAMF's in anime have to ride motorcycles? Kirito from SAO does too. Does that kid from Aldnoah.Zero ride a motorcycle when he's shopping for cheap eggs?

Oh Japan. Making sure you satisfy your otaku in the beginning of the arc with some naked apron fanservice.

But it wasn't a real naked apron!

Still, Miyuki got the desired result: making Tatsuya say he'd like to put her under glass for his personal display. Nope, not creepy at all... We'll see how well those Miyuki PVC figurines sell after the show is over.

Family dynamics are going to be featured during this story arc as well, with the Shibas' stepmother asking Tatsuya to come help the family business figure out whether the Nino Magatama is a Philosopher's Stone or not. Expect to see more of Miyuki than we did during the Games arc.

Keep one eye open for all the sibling affection with overtones of inappropriate intimacy, okay?

Other families to watch out for are the Chibas and their sword skills. I liked the casual BAMF'ing of the police inspectors, instead of the drawn out drama the students in the Magic Schools make when using magic. We better see this Inspector Chiba tease Erika at some point.

Hmm.

New arc means new clues in the first episode to tell you where Sherlock MacGyver is going with this story. Tatsuya makes it clear he thinks a Philosopher's Stone somehow holds magical sequences to take the place of magicians, which he thinks he can take advantage of if he can figure out the Gravity Magic-based containment of nuclear fusion. I'm reminded of the big reveal in Fullmetal Alchemist that Philosopher's Stones were made from the souls of hundreds of dead people. With those East Asian gangs trafficking in Sorcery Boosters made from magician's brains, and how a Spirit Magic Relic is rumored to let anyone use magic, I think we've got the framework set up for this arc.

Tatsuya is slowly being allowed to use much more destructive magic as he faces much more dangerous opponents. I'm looking forward to some rough and tough BAMF'ing going on. Maybe we'll see his awesome teamwork with the Original BAMFsters.

I also hope the scenes we're bound to have of the thesis competition aren't too boring. They made BAMF coding look pretty cool, but this thesis presentation looks like a TED Talk crossed with a PowerPoint slideshow. Nobody needs to see that.
