Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei - Episode 10

Miyuki and Juumonji show their stuff, with BAMF stealth help. High school hijinks before the big competition. Mikihiko tests himself.

Hmm.

This episode was more of the calm before the storm, besides the flaming SUV targeting the school bus. This way, we get a bit more depth into how the Mahoukaverse works. Things like suicide attacks using barely traceable magic, more socially conservative mores than we're used to seeing come out of Japan's youth, and how a magical group has to coordinate their spells, or the big ball of psions will interfere with everything. That last bit explains how Tatsuya helped stop the burning vehicle by cancelling all the hastily prepared spells so Miyuki can put out the flames and Juumonji can physically stop the sliding truck. This is why magic users need all the training, so they don't cause more harm than good, by learning to use their abilities prudently.

The head patriarch certainly put an exclamation point on how to use magic prudently with his little parlor trick, that turned out to be more subtle than sleight-of-hand, since only 5 people in the room noticed his magic spell. Of course, he had to acknowledge our resident BAMF, reminding the viewer of Tatsuya's important and mysterious origins.

The last bit of drama, after all the usual girls talk in the spa, was Mikihiko taking on intruders by himself. The venue for the competition is a military hotel, emphasizing again that there are no civilians at any of these magic specialty schools, so an armed infiltration is a pretty big deal. We get a little flashback of some magic trauma that Mikihiko is still regaining his confidence over, which also explains all of private practice of his skills. It looks like Tatsuya was doing his own bit of private practice, since he is also the "mere bodyguard" for Miyuki. The external drama surrounding the 9-schools competition is slowly being drawn out.

Geh.

We've been concentrating (hurr) on Mizuki's ample assets all season, but where was Honoka hiding her... gifts?

If I were Eimi, I'd be very curious about that too.

Poor Tatsuya. Even with all those people coming to say hi to him at the banquet, including two wait staff in Erika and Mikihiko, he still didn't get a refill on his drink.

Using family connections to hang out with your friends at a military installation? Why not? What's the use of having connections if you don't use them once in a while?

Apparently, Japan has gone back to more conservative dress by the turn of the century. Or maybe Mizuki is just too hawt to wear regular clothes.

It's the hawt. Hawtness is a blessing and a curse. Don't listen to Miyuki! Erika has your back, Mizuki!

Speaking of hawt.

Maybe Miyuki is just making sure she's the one shining the brightest in her brother's eyes. Wouldn't want him to be tempted by that skank Mizuki! Heh. Besides, we believe you, Miyuki, that you've never once considered your big brother as a love interest, sure we do. It's just that possessive-protective-overbearing thing that little sisters excel at, right?

In addition to all the high school hijinks covering meido-cosplay, seeing beautiful girls in regular clothes, and yuri skinship mixed with girls talk in the spa, we had to throw in just a hint of yaoi. Yes, Georgie, I'm sure you're very surprised Masaki is showing an interest in girls. Very surprised, since Masaki doesn't seem to mind you talking to him while he's naked in the shower. 'Cuz that's just what good bros do.
