The origin story of Obito becoming Tobi, then Madara, then the Masked Madara is one of tragedy and despair. Back before we knew anything about the Akatsuki member wearing the mask, he was just a playful rogue ninja who always said he followed orders because "Tobi is a good boy." Seeing where he got this playful nature, and hearing the white Zetsu tell him the other Zetsu clones want to help him rescue Kakashi and Rin because "he is a good boy," gave me the chills. And Rin's death at the hands of Kakashi also explain how their Mangekyou Sharingans were awakened: you have to feel the loss of one of your best friends as it happens. For Obito, the Kamui Sharingan mixed with the senjuu cells of the first Hokage gave him the ability to transport just parts of his body where a weapon touched, making it seem as if attacks passed right through him.

Witnessing the death of Rin also sealed Obito's despair for this world and made him amenable to Madara's plan to sink the world into a dreamland.
