Outbreak Company - Episode 2
How do you sell Japanese culture to an illiterate society? How do you read manga calmly with a loli queen sitting on your lap? Both important questions that must be answered by our Last Otaku-kun.
When last we saw our hero, The Last Otaku-kun, er, uh, Shinichi, he was getting knocked out by loli queen Petrarca. The advisor had to calm her down. Then her cousin, Garius, had to say something about how The Last Otaku-kun definitely could not be so qualified since he was so young, which is hilarious because Shinichi was just knocked out for not believing someone so young could be queen. Well, Shinichi had to stand up for all otaku, and the advisor had to calm Garius down. Quick tempers run in the family apparently.
The SDF liaison Minori might be more qualified for this mission than we thought, as she started imagining all sorts of naughty things happening between Shinichi and Garius. We've got a full-blown fujoshi in our midst.
What I like so far in this show is The Last Otaku-kun is taking his job seriously, and so are the anime producers. No internet means bringing in all the data through hard media. Figuring what things can actually sell if the translation magic is basically telepathy, so written words can't be understood. But the feudal society has 80% of the population illiterate anyway, so just translating the media wouldn't be good enough. The elf-maid character learning how to read Japanese will probably be an important factor later in the show. And this show isn't shying away from the abuses that a feudal society heaps on the serfs. Add in a little imperious loli jealousy, and we've got some drama brewing. Plus, certain portions of this magical society want to learn as much as they can about their visitors through surreptitious means. How naughty, spying on Minori in the changing room!
