Female titan vs. Captain Levi: no contest. Eren is rescued. Dead bodies sacrificed to slow down chasing titans. The Recon Corps returns in shame and failure.
Captain Levi shows us the skills that earned him his peerless reputation. Using Mikasa as a distraction, he makes quick work of the tired female titan and rescues Eren. And was that titan crying because she failed in her mission?
As the Recon Corps continue their retreat with their injured and dead, they have to make the hard decision to leave some of the dead behind, even having to toss dead bodies to the titan horde because they were caught out in the open and didn't have trees or buildings to use their maneuvering gear.
The grim faces of the soldiers as they reenter the city tells of their failure, and is a neat call-back to the beginning of the show as Eren is now on the other side of the crowd looking at them, with small children still idolizing them. Remembering those innocent notions of hero worship, and knowing what the Recon Corps actually faced is an overwhelming feeling for Eren.
Commander Erwin and Captain Levi bear the grimmest faces of all. They had gambled on reaching Eren's old basement, underestimated the enemies they face, and failed. Eren faces an uncertain future being held prisoner again.
Erwin learned a lot of good intelligence on the capabilities of those using intelligent titans, but he will have to bide his time, and gain intelligence on his rivals inside the walls, instead of focusing on the titans outside.
