Episode 13 - "The Story of Memories Made During the Promised Summer"

Hmm.

Aah. The first note of music quickly made me relax like sinking into a comfy overstuffed chair. The only concern was how Futaba's friends Akane and Chizuru were going to fit in with the relaxed seaside vibe. No problems there either.

The whole episode was a character study on Chizuru, though. Through small glances, pauses, and finally some inner and outer dialogue, Chizuru confronted her feelings of how much she missed Futaba and her other fears tied to their separation. Futaba was always so shy and timid, but here in a new town with a new friend, she is more outgoing, louder, and confident.

Chizuru had been the one of their group that watched out for Futaba and was overall the bossy one. Seeing Futaba with her new friend Hikari filled her with a "gloomy feeling" of jealousy, fears of being left out and left behind, and no longer necessary to help Futaba. There was probably a little bit of guilt for holding Futaba back from being more confident and more of an independent person. She even started to take it out on Hikari, but like all of the characters in a healing anime, she's a good girl and caught herself. True to herself, she still had to be outspoken about it, though!

Even so, Chizuru had to have herself a little cry with Akane on the train ride back home. Part of missing Futaba is going to be missing that part of herself that Futaba needed when they were growing up. Now, she can appreciate Futaba living up to her potential.

Heh.

Oh my. This is the best! Akane and Chizuru are Manhome versions of Akari and Aika from ARIA! Their hair styles are the same. Chizuru has Aika's earings. Akane says "ahi!" like Akari. Chizuru says "prohibited!" like Aika. Their muppet versions are exactly the same! Their voice actors are the same! This was fun. Really fun.

Hikari looks more excited to see Futaba's friends than Futaba. Well, she always looks more excited about anything than Futaba...

Always have to talk about the cats. That's Cha-kamon, not Chaka-mon. Well, his name is actually Aria, but let's not get too pedantic.

Futaba still blushes all the way down to her shoulders.

Whoa. Nice sign for suicide prevention at that bridge.

All these girls are really aware of how the others are feeling. Futaba and Akane picked up on Chizuru being worried about something.

Of course the girls have to go diving.

Yay! Katori-sensei's belly button! Ahem, I mean, yay, Mato-chan-sensei...

Ha! The girls didn't like that they needed to put down their weight.

And Chizuru made up with everyone in the end. She's a good girl.

Aw. Ai and Makoto missed out on the fun. Ai is still kicking her brother.

It's over? Don't worry. This show will be back for Spring 2018. Not long now!
