Naruto Shippuuden - Episode 387



Naruto and his allies successfully pull the Tailed Beasts out of Obito. Kakashi and Minato face a defeated Obito while the others rush to confront Madara.

Heh.

Har. Naruto's dad thinks he gets his talk-no-jutsu skill from his mom's nagging.

Nice bonding moment there between the Tailed Beasts and Naruto. He hadn't talked to the One-Tail when Son the Four-Tail shared their chakra space with the other Beasts, but he remembers him from when he defeated Gaara during the chuunin exam so many years ago.

Hmm.

Three things got reinforced this episode about Naruto.

1. Naruto keeps his promises, which we saw when he freed the Tailed Beasts.
2. Naruto never gives up, which Kakashi claims is the difference between him and Obito. If he stumbles or trips, he'll get back up, without renouncing reality.
3. And Naruto has charisma, which Kakashi explains to Obito why he has a better chance of his plan working for peace instead of the Infinite Dream. Because Kakashi will help Naruto, not Obito, and he's not alone in joining Naruto's side.

We've heard these things many times before about Naruto. Two of them come from his Ninja Way, which Jiraiya wrote about in the Tale of the Gutsy Ninja even before Naruto was born. He never gives up and he'll never go back on his word. We only started getting hints about his charisma later when Shikamaru told his father that there was something about Naruto that made him want to follow him and when people started to notice that he had a gift for becoming friends with anyone, even a 9-tailed fox demon who is the embodiment of hatred or a presumed dead Uchiha responsible for the deaths of so many, including his own parents.

We got some of that mirroring with Kakashi and Obito that Japanese hero stories like to reference when Naruto agreed to leave Obito in the hands of Kakashi and Minato, much like Naruto wants to deal with Sasuke. These three finally had that chance to talk about the death of Rin.

Something Kakashi told Obito, that you can't fill a hole in your heart by yourself but only those around you can do that, echoed what the former jinchuuriki of the 9-Tailed Fox told Naruto's mom when she became the jinchuuriki: fill your heart with love to keep away the fox's hatred. But again, a hole in your heart can't be filled by yourself, and Kushina had Minato's help there.



In Kakashi's story earlier this year, we saw that Minato and the Third Hokage had a plan to do this with Kakashi after he lost Obito and Rin. His hole didn't start to get filled until he took on the last Uchiha who was very much like his younger self and the knuckleheaded son of his much admired teacher who was very much like his dead friend.

The Beasts are free, but it looks like it's time for some Gaara Shippuuden next week as Gaara reconnects with his own Tailed Beast Shukakau the Raccoon Dog. They didn't have a great relationship, so I'm interested to see what the filler, er, anime only in-depth retelling has to tell us when they talk about that Naruto kid being Gaara's first friend.
