Obito Shippuuden. Obito tells Naruto that he wants to see him despair to prove to himself that he has taken the right path to make world peace.

Heh.

I wondered why Obito's flashbacks of Kakashi and Rin at the ninja academy looked so familiar. Then it hit me: we saw all these scenes in the short montage immediately after Naruto unmasked the Masked Madara. Talk about planning so far ahead for this show.

Something that hasn't been totally made clear in the anime is why Obito was always late, and why he always seemed to have candy when he finally showed up. It's because he couldn't stop himself from helping any elderly he passed. They always gave Obito candy afterwards.

We see a mirror image of Naruto's team when looking at Obito's team, and the little love jealousy that developed there. However, I believe it was plainly obvious that Rin had much deeper feelings for Obito than the girly admiration she shared with her classmates for the wildly competent and cool Kakashi. Every girl wants to feel special, like she's the only one person who can be there for someone else, and she had that with Obito.

Obito keeps saying he threw his identity away to become the 2nd Sage of the Six Paths, but we know that's not true. Jinchuurikis need a strong sense of self, and a strong bond with loved ones to tie themselves to this world, or the tailed beasts' psyches would overwhelm them. Obito drew on his past self to stabilize his new form.

Hmm.

Obito will keep trying to convince Naruto to give up because he couldn't do it by force. The closest Naruto came to despair about not letting his comrades die was when Neji died. It was Hinata who became Naruto's rock at that moment. Talking isn't going to cut it with Naruto anymore.

It feels like rehashing, since we've seen much of Obito's story earlier this year, but this time around, his story is being told from his own perspective to convince Naruto to join him. I think he also looking for Naruto to convince him to stop the plan too. With Madara still out there watching, Obito might not have as much control over the whole situation as he thinks.

Special Note.

This week, the manga that the anime is adapted from ended its 15 year run. Naruto, the gutsy ninja who never went back on his word and wanted to become the leader of his village, did all that on the 700th chapter. I'm sad and happy about how things resolved themselves in the main story.

Sad that a story I've been following weekly for almost 10 years is over. Another shonen manga ended its run this year too, The Disciple of History's Strongest Kenichi, and that leaves me with only two titles to follow in that genre: Bleach and Fairy Tail.

I'm happy with how Naruto kept his promise to Sakura to return Sasuke to the village. It all worked out in the end, with fun hints about the future of Naruto's world as well. These kinds of stories about a hero improving themselves always means you have to have stronger opponents and more dire circumstances each time. Saving the world from an angry ninja god (that's spoiler free enough, I hope) pretty much meant Naruto's story had nowhere else to go. I'm not sure I would like to see a story about the next generation of Konoha's ninjas, since I was always interested in, you know, the title character.

The author, Masashi Kisihimoto, says there is a New Era project for Naruto coming next year, so I'm looking forward to find out what he has for us. I hope it isn't as boring as what the author of Negi decided to do with the next story in that magical world.

For now, I'm satisfied with Naruto's ending.

良かったてばよ! (Yokattatebayo! It was good, believe it!)
