Naruto Shippuuden - Episode 357
New season, but Kakashi Shippuuden continues. Itachi joins ANBU and we see the tension between the Uchiha clan and the village from Kakashi's perspective.
It's several years later, and Kakashi and Tenzo now have the voices we recognize as adults. Guy is still concerned over the gloominess of his eternal rival, much to the dismay of a young Kurenai and Asuma, because his concerns usually turns into his usual hot bloodedness. Guy's solution: join ANBU also, to keep an eye on Kakashi. The Hokage refuses, saying it's not for him. Danzo also refuses Guy, saying he does not have "darkness."
Instead, the newest member of Kakashi's squad is also the youngest in the organization's history: Itachi Uchiha, Sasuke's older brother. They make no mention of how young Kakashi was when the 4th Hokage recruited him, because he was really young, and Danzo's Root members don't count, because sometimes he snatches them from their families, or wherever..., when they're barely in grade school.
Already, through Itachi, we see conflict of loyalties he will have to the village or his clan, as his father asks him to spy on the inside echelons of power, and Danzo asks him to spy on the workings of the Uchiha clan, whose enclave is placed outside the village walls. Itachi's conversations with Kakashi add a deeper connection to this conflict because of Kakashi's Sharingan, given to him by his friend Obito.
On their first mission together, which is to eliminate another village's squad if they betray their ostensible diplomatic mission parameters, Itachi is impressed by the astuteness of Guy and his prowess with pure physical skills. No one ever questions Guy's ninja skills, they just don't like his, uh, passion away from missions. Guy has a chance to see Kakashi on an actual assassination mission, which troubles him.
Back at the village, conversations with Itachi show Kakashi's reputation as a cold-blooded killer, even among his own ANBU team members, is not correct. His cherished rule, inherited from Obito, and from the shame brought on by his father, is that your friends' lives are more important than the mission. Guy knows this about Kakashi, and thinks the "darkness" in Kakashi is not something part of his personality, which is why he asks the Hokage to make Kakashi leave ANBU.
Next up, the purge of the Uchiha clan at the hands of Itachi. Some more details to be added in during this filler, er, uh, anime original deeper retelling of past events.
