It seems that both sides, the ADA's and Team Landis, are getting desperate. Landis' Spanish lawyers have offered another "natural" explanation for the elevated T/E ratio: dehydration. This is crap and anyone who saw the stage would agree. The man consumed 71 bottles of water! Also, medically, its highly unlikely. Ah, lawyers, they always have to say something. But on the other side, the chief of the Swiss ADA labs said the current testing protocol for testosterone doping is crap too! The Lausanne, Switzerland laboratory had just completed a study which "indicated that there were major differences in the way the human body absorbs additional doses of the male sex hormone and reacts to it." Here is what Martial Saugy, the Swiss chief, had to say about their research:
There is a very big variation between individuals, as much in the effects as in the ability to detect the product. The study does not conclude that dozens or hundreds of athletes are doped with testosterone, but that athletes are not all equal before testosterone doping.
Saugy warns that new testing procedures are not being developed because there are too many legal challenges to new doping research, which is hampering the research and the development of more accurate testing. The Lausanne lab, according to the AFP, is the same lab that handled Tyler Hamilton's doping tests and eventually handed down his two year ban for blood doping. Saugy's warning might be related to all the legal proceedings that centered around Hamilton's repeated and continuing denials of any doping on his part.
