After winning the fourth stage of the Giro as a breakaway survivor, Joe Dombrowski also picked up the most King of the Mountain points along the way. He is not the first American to earn the blue jersey, but he is the first one to wear it during a stage. Andy Hampsten, who won the 1988 Giro d'Italia, also won the climbers jersey from his strong efforts in the mountainous stages of the last week. However, because he was also the overall leader during the race, he wore the pink jersey, loaning the blue jersey to the KOM runner-up. Joe Dombrowski wore the Blue KOM Jersey on Stage 5 of the 2021 Giro on his 30th birthday, but after crashing heavily he may not start Stage 6 due to suspected concussion.
