Ninety years ago, May 10, 1931, on Stage 2 of the 1931 Giro d'Italia, race leader Learco Guerra wore the first ever pink jersey, the maglia rosa, so spectators could identify him in the peloton. It was pink to match the pages of the sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, much like the yellow jersey matched the yellow pages of the sporting newspaper L'Auto, which owned the Tour de France. Filippo Ganna, a young Italian riding for Ineos Grenadiers, and the current Time Trial World Champion, currently wears the maglia rosa in the 2021 Giro.
