It's been ten years since Strike Witches aired on TV, which doesn't count the movies, the OVA's, the spinoffs, and the gag manga adaptation last year. The opening credits and prologue make clear that this title will stay true to its spirit of showing cute girls' underwear and crotches as they fight against mysterious aliens with red beam weapons.
For those coming back to Strike Witches without seeing the movies or OVA's, we needed to remember that Yoshika lost her magic at the end of the 2nd season and regained it somehow during the movie when she flew a prototype Striker Unit. She kept up with her medical school training in the meantime, which is why she's in Switzerland, er, Helvetia. She saved her friend Altia from an irritated polar bear at a circus by healing its toothache.
The eye catches continue the tradition of using the original artist's work. Mio "graduated" to an adult military position, but her adjutant remembers how she used to dress as a Strike Witch.
The first part of the season means getting the band back together. Yoshika's friend Altia conveniently has a father who's a captain of a battleship. Mio used her military connections to arrange a phone call with him at sea, which led to Yoshika overhearing his ship come under attack by an iceberg. Yeah. Wondering how this is possible and how it couldn't be a Neuroi because they hate water, Yoshika took off using Helvetia's sole Striker Unit. Her 501st colleagues saw her contrail as she flew to Antwerp, er, Antwerpen, which meant that Yoshika will get reinforcements against that strange iceberg Neuroi soon. To be continued!
The end credits focused the girls of the newly reformed 501st Fighter Wing. Mio can't fly anymore, but there's a new Japanese, er, Fuso girl taking her place.
