In a dramatic moment that had high emotions but lacked exposition, Megumi discovered Saiba wants to marry Erina because he thinks his ideas of new flavors can better serve Mana Nakiri. But why does he have to marry Erina if he can do the same thing by winning BLUE? Erina just wants to live with her mother again.
Souma talked about his own mother, Tamako Yukihira, the Yukihira Diner's owner's daughter who was a terrible cook, could only make fried rice well, and dueled with Joichiro to make better tasting dishes. After she died suddenly, Souma challenged his dad to cooking duels to break him out of depression and they both combine super nasty ingredients to remind them of how Tamako would mess up her experimental dishes for customers. It became a sign of affection for Souma to share his nasty combined flavors with people.
Souma met Saiba in the semifinals of BLUE, where their theme was the five grand cuisines in one dish. Erina despaired because of how formidable Saiba seemed with his Cross Knives ability of mimicking chefs' styles with their cooking implements and how he had already traveled the world defeating Noir Chefs from France, Italy, India, Turkey, and China. None of that mattered to Souma who had been fighting with someone who already did all that as he grew up in the kitchen of a small diner. Souma's confidence gave Erina a glimmer of hope, but is it justified? We'll get the answer to that next episode.
